I have 5 USB devices, and out of all of them I only have one that will work on my USB ports!! That is a HP Scanner, which will work in either of my USB ports. All of the items that wont work are: Intel Pc camera,Sidewinder Gamepad Pro,HP printer, and microsoft intellieye mouse. I have loaded all the correct USB drivers for each item and it shows everything correctly, like in Device manager it will say item is working properly, but in each of the items software when I go to use the item it says its not connected?? I read that some items are not compatible with a USB open Host controller ,which is what I have. So am I able to just convert my USB ports over to a Universal Host controller type with some sort of software or not?? If there is some sort of other problem please help me out!! I have been trying to get these items to work for a long time with no success! Remind you the scanner will work in either of them, then I remove it, plug in the gamepad, windows recognizes it loads the drivers off the cd, then the software says its not connected??! Anyone have any ideas??
Thanks alot

I had a problem with a webcam too. I posted 72903 because I managed to get it to work. There is an upgrade which might do what you want. Check Microsoft q240075.

Jason, this site has lots of good info on USB. http://www.usbman.com/
There are a lot of problems with usb because of the two different interfaces, UCHI and OHCI. UHCI is Universal Host Controller Interface and OHCI is Open Host Controller.
Some devices want UHCI and some want OHCI, and the device and it's mfg either won't specify that or doesn't know.
You'll find out when you try to intstal the device, it'll work or won't. You already found out Device Manager isn't too smart.
'not connected' means the program can't find the device like it's not hooked to the pc.
If the drivers are installed, your camera or scanner should show up in 'import/select twain device' in any program that you can scan from like Paint Shop Pro or the Windows Imaging program. Your HP scanner should do that.
VIA is known for usb problems and despite their 4 in 1 drivers, filter drivers, etc they haven't got it right yet. Intel chipsets seem to be usb friendly so far.
The best way to install a usb device is to install the drivers without the device hooked to the pc. Then hook the device up and Windows should find it and finish the install. Then if it won't work, it's usually an interface controller conflict.
Web cams and Digital cameras are good for making a mess if hooked up before installing the drivers.
If you can't get the device to work because of the interface problem, an ad-on card might fix it plus gives 2 more usb ports.
Check with the card's mfg to see if it installs UHCI or OHCI first. I got a card once that said UHCI on the package but the card installed OHCI, a new card in old packaging (Cables to Go #22426)
Hope some of that helps you.
