Comment:

I recently enabled my usb ports in win 98. Win 98 found the hardware and installed the software for it. After this happened there were 2 entries under the USB section of the system device manger. One is "Inter(r) 82371SB PCI to USB Universal Host Controller." That works fine. The other is called "USB Root Hub", but it has a yellow exclamation point on it. And when I view the properties of this entry it says "The NTKERN.VXD device loader(s) for this device could not load the device driver. (Code 2.) What should I do to fix this. thanks.

I've got a similar setup to you, but I don't have a file called ntkern.vxd on my system.

Have you accidentally installed the NT version instead of Win98?

"I had the same problem, remove APM from device manager and it all works without a hitch" DS Nottm/UK
I verify this fix. No more problems with USB after APM removed.

New fix for my system.
In BIOS-I enabled USB legacy keyboard support and disabled System inactivity timeout(was set to 30 min.)
In Control Panel-I changed Compaq APM to low, Allows Windows Time-outs.
I reinstalled APM but did not keep VPOWER.VXD 4.10.2223. VPOWER.VXD file version is 4.10.2222.(This is a driver for APM.)
System appears to be as stable as with deleting APM. I have not tested system for critical step.
Reference for Intel motherboard stated default for USB legacy keyboard support unenabled. Enabling stated to resolve some WIN98SE shutdown problems. Good luck.
