Comment:
If I connect a USB HDD to a pc running Windows 98SE (assuming I have correct drivers installed) will the pc have problems reading from/writing to the USB HDD if it is NTFS formatted? Thanks

w98 will not read NTFS. Nor will any MSDOS.

If at first you don't succeed, you're about average.

I think what Shaun meant was can Windows 98 read/write an NTFS disk the same way that Windows 98 can read/write an NTFS disk over a network.
Unfortunately, the same doesn't apply to a USB disk and it will have to be FAT16/32

Stuart You are right. Previously I have bought an IDE hard drive and external enclosure separately, connected the drive to the motherboard and formatted for FAT32 before installing in the enclosure. If I buy a ready assebled USB hard drive unit, I think it will come ready formatted for NTFS, ideally I would like to be able to just plug it in to a pc running windows 98, install the driver and be able to write to the drive. Is there any way to do this? Thanks

If you buy a ready assembled new hard disk unit it shouldn't be formatted with anything. NTFS is just one of many file system you might want to use. What if you wanted to install Linux or use the unit on a Mac.
You should be able to format it from Windows 98.

Stuart, Thanks, wasn't sure if you could format USB drives via the USB connection, hence my assumption that they came ready formatted. I presume you just right click on the drive in Windows Explorer and choose format? I guees the drive is already partitioned ? Thanks

You should be able to format it from Windows Explorer. You might even have to partition it as well.
You will probably find that the disk will come with software to allow you to do all these setup tasks.
