Subject: usb devices that work
OS: win98(fe)
CPU/Ram: pent100/32meg
Comment:
I found an old pent100 with 32meg ram..can be increased a little..reinstalling win98(fe) it has a four port usb card...wondering what devices I might aquire that will work..pens seem to be mostly 2.0 but some say will work on 1x..have no issues with usb on dslinux with same card ( lexar secure2 and digicam ) any devices known to work with win98FE would be appreciated..they must have designed something to work with it..it passed so quickly..better get the os installed first..

Though it may have a 4 port USB card are you sure that it is supported ? The BIOS must support USB and doubt a P100 would !

Any USB device will work if it has the drivers, except for mice and keyboards obviously, as they are usually recognised..

USB2 is backward compatable, just run slower on USB1.

Thanks...did not know usb was backward compatable..naturally may have some fun with drivers.
The BIOS, under integrated periphials has a listing for usb controller to disable or inable...it is currently disabled and had one of those ports on the board that one could plug a cabled port into...I have never found one..the 4 port card is a TURBOQUAD4 and is usb 1.1..and is supposed to work on win98..that is sometimes to mean 98se only..will look for info.
I was thinking maby pc cam, usb stick and an optical mouse plus a digicam..thought used may be best as they may work better if DESIGNED for usb 1.1 thus the request for devices and brands that worked...the new ones as you say are slower...maby the original were also?
Thanks

You need to enable USB in BIOS

Any devices with the specific drivers will work obviously the manufacturers minimum PC specs must be adhered to.....

Thanks...yes I understand...I was hopeing to get a list of a few devices designed for usb1.1 that have drivers available...I do a lot of yard sales and junk shop buying for projects and have had experience of finding devices that have no drivers available ( ie drivers guide) ..it is good to know that usb is backward compatible but drivers will be the issue for 98fe...guess I was looking for devices commonly used at the time that still have drivers widely available..sorry...a work in progress..

Are you sure it's USB 1.1? On a pentium 100 1.0 is more likely. Also windows 98FE did not have any real support for USB. This was part of the SE "upgrade".

You will probably need to find the drivers for the USB card as well as for any devices.

I guess if you have the patience to use a pentium 100, you might have the patience to get it working. I wouldn't count on USB 2.0 devices working well though

"You need to enable USB in BIOS"

That only applies to the onboard USB.

If you want what you need to know to hook up your onboard USB to a wiring adapter/ports, if you can supply a mboard make and model number, or a brand name system model number if that applies, we may be able to find you the info you need.

Current USB 2.0 cards often do not have drivers for Win 98 first edition, and some current USB 1.x (only) cards do not have drivers for Win 98 first edition, but many older USB 1.x cards did/do.

The USB support in Win 98 first edition is not as good as it is in 98SE and later - there will probably be be some devices that work in 98SE and later that don't work in 98 first edition.

As far as USB 2.0 support, it was not built into Win 98 or 98SE, but if drivers are available for the card for those operating systems, a USB 2.0 card will work fine.
Cards that have Win 98 first edition drivers are harder to find.
e.g. London Drugs has a Certified Data USB 2.0 PCI Host Card that has the Win 98 drivers - locally or online www.londondrugs.com

"...for your info win95 had usb support..."

Only Win95 OSR 2.1 and 2.5 have it - the earlier versions did not, and from what I've seen, the earlier versions are what most people bought.
Also, according to this, the USB support in Win 98 is the same as in 98SE, so I was wrong about that. http://www.usbman.com/Win95%20USB%2...
So the USB support of different devices should be pretty good in Win 98.

Thanks..additional advice for those who use win95 and wonder about adding usb....I think win98se has better usb support but 98fe can still make good use of it..I think drivers are the real issue..I installed a logitech usb optical mouse and had to find a driver pack and redo it in an orderly fashion, which I now forget, but it works fine. must do better documentation. thanks
