Comment:

My husband has Win98SE. We've been trying to install a USB card reader. It shows up in the device manager as being there, but will not bring up the new drive letter in My Computer. Any suggestions on what could be causing the problem?
TIA

Are the USB ports activated in the Bios?

Without activation the PCI bus controllers wont see it.

As far as I know they are activated. We use other devices on USB ports and they seem to work fine.

Hi Linda
What is the make and model of your USB card reader ?
There may be a FAQ or troubleshooter on the manufacturer's site.

It's a MicroTech
Thanks for the reply. Would like to get this figured out so we don't have to hook up the camera up all the time to download photo's. It works fine on WinMe.

Step 10 might be your problem
Good luck !

How to change drive designation letters USB CameraMate in Windows 98 & Me.
1. Go to Start.
2. Settings.
3. Control Panel.
4. System.
5. Device Manager.
6. Select Disk Drives from your Device Manager list.
7. Select e-USB CompactFlash.
8. Click Properties.
9. Select Settings.
10. Make sure the word "removable" located in the Window has a check next to it.
11. Select a drive letter designation from the Start drive letter designation window. Make sure the drive letter designation is not already a letter currently used.
12. Do the same for the End Drive letter
13. Restart your computer.
14. Repeat steps 1 through 13, except at step 7 you will select e-USB SmartMedia.

Were there drivers that came with the reader? And are they installed?

Yes there are drivers and they have been installed. Like I said, the Device Manager is showing them as being in the p.c. but will not reconize the drive letter in the My Computer Window.
Thanks for the reply.

If anyone else has any suggestions please let me know.
TIA

What drive letter, if any, does the settings tab show for the reader in Device Manager / Disk Drives ?
If there is no drive letter, what happened when you tried to manually assign one ?

In the device manager, it shows the letter G for one and H for the other. The removable is checked. It still does not show the drive letters in My Computer. The light is on the card reader like it is getting power.
Any other suggestions?
Thanks Again

Could the problem be that we upgraded to Win98 Second Edition and that it's has a AMD processor?
