Subject: USB 2.0 in Win98SE
OS: Win98SE
CPU/Ram: 1.5Gz AMD 256DDR
Comment:

I recently purchased a fairly inexpensive but
up to date machine which has 4 USB slots and
2 additional bridge attachments on the motherboard. The manual for this PcChips
board says that the two USB ports on the back
of the machine are 2.0 but that all ports
are USB 2.0 compatible.

When I look at Device Manager in Win98SE I see:

VIA PCI to USB Enhanced Host Controller
USB 2.0 Root Hub

VIA Tech 3038 PCI to USB Univ Host Controller
USB Root Hub
VIA Tech 3038 PCI to USB Univ Host Controller
USB Root Hub
VIA Tech 3038 PCI to USB Univ Host Controller
USB Root Hub

It would appear that only one slot/port is
USB 2.0 and the rest are 1.1 or something
is somewhat screwed up.

I am using the VIA drivers for USB 2.0 which
apparently are only supposed to work in Win2K
and Win XP. However, I see these drivers
advertised as working in Win98SE on other
sites.

Can anyone explain what I am seeing here?

"It would appear that only one slot/port is

I see nothing in your post to indicate that.
You've got too many root hubs listed - there is only one.
There is one host controller for each pair of ports (3 for 6).

"I am using the VIA drivers for USB 2.0 which

Where did you get that from? If you installed the Via mboard drivers from the CD that comes with the mboard, you probably already have Win98SE drivers installed.

If you don't think you do, go here for the AGP drivers
http://www.viaarena.com/?PageID=2

Or here for all the Via drivers.
(see the note about older op systems - use the older version)

They automatically install the right drivers for your chipset and your operating system.

A simple search on the web using:
"USB 2.0 requirements" reveals Win 98 and 98SE support USB 2.0.

That's interesting...

A similar search a month or two ago indicated otherwise - and in fact was clearly emphasised on many sites... (including at least one site dedicated to pure usb (1x and 2x)...

Also a phone call (by a colleague who was having problems with the usb kit (some spec'd for usb 1.0 and some spec'd for usb 2.0) to one major PC outlet in his area also confirmed - no '9x suppport for usb 2.0.

And I did similar brief trawl prior to my post above - again no solid support for '9x and usb 2.0; some outfits claim they have it, but no hard evidence...?

Support isn't built into Win 98/98SE, but that doesn't mean support can't be added.

See 8. .......third-party USB 2.0 support for Windows 98....

Thanks for the links etc.

The first one (I think it was that one - or another very similar to it) was one of the sources that a few months back was saying categorically "no usb 2 suppport around/available for '9x..."

Times change...

Hi,

I have some problems with "USB 2.0 support" under Win98SE!

I have a Via Epia Board.

First, it worked fine. I installed an USB 2.0 CD-burner and I was able to write 32x.

Then I tried to plug in an USB1.1 laser printer (brother) but it didn't show up at all when connected. I installed the brother printer driver for usb and the printer now prints fine, but the CD-burner won't be recognized anymore.

So what's happening here?

I seem to have lost "USB 2.0" support altogether.

Any ideas to solve this matter are welcome...

Thx,
Zardo
