We have a Pentium II computer with Windows 95 C (60Mb RAM). It has two USB ports, and there's everything installed for the USB to work (eg. PCI to USB Host Controller & USB Root Hub). We bought a Samsung Digimax U-CA 5 digital camera, but we can't move the pictures from the camera into the computer.
The "Removable disk" -icon doesn't appear on the Resource Manager, though there's no problem with the installation. Also, in the System manager there's no sign of the camera, though it is installed. There is nothing wrong with the ports itself, the computer knows when something is plugged into them.
When I restart the computer or try to run the program "Digimax Viewer", this error comes:
"File STIMGBROWSER.exe is linked to a missing export function KERNEL32.DLL:GetLongPathNameA."
Thus the program cannot be executed. Where's the problem? The Kernel32.dll file I have is version 4.03.1212, can it be updated? Could it help? I'm no computer expert, I have no idea what that means.I really need answers quickly. Anything concerning Windows 95 and USB is appreciated, as long as it isn't anything like "update your operation system to 98" or "buy a new computer", because that is not an option. I am very pleased with the Win 95 I have, and I know I can use the USB, I just don't know how, yet. Please help!

Hi Lightforce.
Make sure you are in Windows Explorer. Then when you plug in you will notice another drive option appear. Click on that and you should find your photos, providing you have installed the drivers that came with your camera. Have a nice day Lightforce.

That's part of the problem, the drive doesn't appear, not even when I first run Windows Explorer and then plug the camera. The computer makes a noise as if it was doing something, but nothing happens. I get no errors, nothing. The camera says it's connected, but...
The BIOS I have is American Megatrends and the date is 7/15/95, so it's old. I am too scared to update the BIOS because it might cause the whole computer to stop booting. The problem might be with that BIOS. The chipset I have is Intel 440BX/ZX rev 2 (according to eSupport BIOS agent).

That didn't help. I don't see the removable disk icon, that's part of the problem. So no help there...
I have Intel 440B/ZX rev 2 chipset and my BIOS is dated to 7/15/95. I don't have the knowledge or courage to update the BIOS because it might stop the computer from booting... help!

Does the Camera software categorically state it works with W95 OSR2.5 ??
In my experience you need W98SE..

The error you got is what I call a "sophisticated way" of telling you that you need Windows 98 or higher. I'm very very sorry about that, I know it hurts, but most of the manufacturers these days don't make drivers or programs to support Windows 95 because it's so old. Don't feel bad. I have a Windows 95 machine too, and it hurts me too!
If God has to teach someone a lesson more than once for them to learn it, it just shows how stubborn they are.

Yep, "linked to a missing export " means you (urgently) need to upgrade to 98, regardless of your feelings on the matter.
USB support under 95 is a limited proposition at best:
Recommendations
If you want to take full advantage of the latest USB devices you will need to upgrade to a newer version of Windows.

If you look in the camera manual, under Software System Requirements (page 104 in the one I've seen) it does not support Win95.
"I know that I'm mad - I've always been mad..."

You could 'try' and find a later version of KERNEL32.DLL that will work with Win95.
The following Microsoft site helps with DLLs.

I don't believe mixing & matching will do much more than halt the system

Thanks guys, but I found a good answer myself. I wasn't going to give up the Win 95 because the camera didn't support it, I knew that. But if something says it works on "Win 98, 98SE, 2000, ME & XP" it doesn't mean it doesn't work on Win 95 too.
So, we got a Belkin memory card reader (8 in 1) which also said it doesn't work under 95, but: no problems with installation and now I'm able to insert the memory card of the camera into the reader and move the files to this computer without any problems! The USB works lightning fast and perfectly well.
I'm so glad we could keep this 95, it's reliable and doesn't get viruses. (The 8 long years we've had this computer there's been only ONE virus! That was Sircam32, which wasn't too dangerous.)
So don't give up your old reliable machines, there's always a way to get around the problems! :)

Good workaround, but I think you were lucky too.
I use 95 on a great many (marginal) machines - but it does have its limitations and quirks
