I am working on my sisters computer, it is a pentium 2 with i think 233 mhz, the computer brand says on the front Plus/Data, Ive never heard of it. But I am wondering If I can put our old Pentium 3 600MHZ in it. they are the same chips, large with dual fans, I already added 128 and 64 mb memory sticks to it, and it took them no problems, but I want to put the 600 in it to replace the 233, I dont know the motherboard. Will this work and how do I do it?

If you don't want to open the system and poke around inside, download Everest Home Edition. It's a freeware program that will tell you all sorts of things about the system hardware/software, and provide links to the hardware manufacturers websites for things such as drivers, manuals, etc.

Find out what motherboard is in the system and do a search for the manual. Or visit the manufacturers site and find out the specs. This will tell you what CPU the board will support.

Heh, just realized you've already been inside the system. Look on the motherboard for the silkscreened make/model number.

It looks as if it supports 66/100 bus. Info here:

Also the computer is a P2 300 MHZ, looking to upgrade to P3 600. What do you think?

Cancel that. Sorry, 450 MHZ is the largest supported CPU.

If it happens to be the SE440BX-2 it may support a 600 mhz P-III depending on the bios and board version numbers. Here's some info on that:

SE440BX-2

Some of those boards could see the 600 cpu OK but couldn't accomodate the core voltage.

So it would be best if I left it alone right?
