Hello all,

I'm new here and wanted to ask the following:

I have a copy of XP pro and was thinking to upgrade my win98 system. I was recommended a fresh clean install but have like zillions of gigabytes of data on the old system which i really don’t want to lose. Backup of all the data + all applications currently installed on my 98 system will take forever to complete and then restore.

Which brings me to my question. Anyone here tried simply upgrading to XP? (not clean install). Anything special to be weary about?. Will XP register all installed programs to date or do i have to reinstall everything although it is only an upgrade.

Will very much appreciate your input.

James H.

just tried an upgrade of W98se to XP HE. some of the software does not work under XP and needs to be uninstalled and an XP version reinstalled. my main problem with it was that my network would not work, I could access the internet OK but not the other files and folders on the other pcs. I found no way around this problem. I next tried installing the upgrade as a clean install and the network access and internet access worked fine, so something in the upgrade did not work for me. SO I would definitely recommend that you backup your data and do a clean install, you will be much happier. ensure that you have all of your hardware drivers for XP before you start and that you have backed up all of the data you want to keep. James,

Done it dozens of times with no problems, it will actually test and give you a list of incompatible hardware and software at which point you can choose to continue or bail out. If you don't have any issues go ahead and you'll be fine. Depending on what issues it does list, you make the call whether it's worth buying a new card or finding new software to replace the stuff it doesn't like. TIP: Make sure you have AT LEAST 128 meg of RAM.
