Yeah you can do that. I wonder if it was looking for a win95 disk? I've never heard of upgrading from W98FE to W98SE but that's just me.

well it might not be possible i am a self taughtlearner and i dont know these thing i get credit for being a girl and trying ? lol asking for ne advice- thanks much

That is 'really' strange that it couldn't see the Win98FE CD. I don't understand that at all!
You 'can' install SE over the top of FE. You might run into a minor problem if it's a 'full' install SE CD. If you do, just rename c:\windows\win.com to win.old. Then make sure you install to c:\windows and not c:\windows000 or something like that.
Another minor problem you might encounter. When I've install SE on top of FE I've encountered the notorius SE 'Shutdown problem'. Formatting and installing SE clean worked better.

There are two versions of the Windows 98 SE upgrade, with a big difference in the price. The "cheap" Windows 98 SE upgrade is not a full install of Windows 98 SE, unfortunately. It *must* be installed on top of Windows 98. The more expensive Windows 98 SE upgrade version *is* a full install. I don't know which one you have, but it sounds like the cheaper one.
I have one of the cheaper upgrade CDs in front of me. It's called "Microsoft Windows98 Second Edition Updates," and the part number on the CD is X04-12707. Is that what you have?

OK, the problem here is that Win98SE was not intended to upgrade Win98FE. It was meant (by Microsoft) to be an upgrade from Win95 or Win3x, so the Win98FE isn't recognized as a valid previous version.
The workaround of renaming win.com may still run into the same snag. This workaround is for using the FULL version as an upgrade.
There is a different workaround for installing The Upgrade as a Full version. Try this link:

Phil, what you have is the UpDATE CD, not the UpGRADE CD.
Your CD WAS meant to update from Win98 FE, but a regular Upgrade CD was not.
Your CD is actually the rarer of the two.

You know dave, that's right. i have Win98 SE upgrade, Full And 98 update. not that i'm using them anymore. but i think for lack of response from happyl we're just spinning our collective wheels.
