Just boot into 98 as you normally would, the go to Start > Search > files or folders, & type in WIN.COM (there may be more than one entry). Rename ALL the entries to WIN.OLD, reboot, & install 98SE over the top.

Hi,
Microsoft made a specific upgrade CD 98 first edition to Win 98 S E. You can still pick this up quite cheaply on ebay and reportedly new copies are still around.
Failing that you can upgrade from FE to SE with a full SE CD by the renaming of win.com as described.

A backup and clean install would probably be a much better idea though. This gets rid of all the accumulated crap we all pick up.

You can only have one file.name in the same directory, so once you rename win.com to win.old, that's it. If you try with another file, say win.ini, it will overwrite (on confirmation, or it won't at all) your first win.old. It's only win.com that needs to be renamed, and this depends upon the type of 98SE cd you possess.
Also, win.com ~should~ only be in your (%windir% or %winbootdir%) windows directory. (Usually c:\windows.)

Sometimes other programs create backups of certain system files, WIN.COM being one of them. You should always do the search & rename ALL that you find

The inexpensive CD that goes from Win98FE to Win98SE is an 'Update' CD. It can only be run from windows. The more expensive 'Upgrade' CD can be run from Dos.

Programs that create backups of system files usually do so with system.ini and win.ini. I've never seen win.com backed up since it's not a file that would be altered.

The only reason I ever mention it is because I've encountered it myself. And I also recall a lengthy thread within the past year when someone insisted they'd renamed win.com but still couldn't do the install. When I suggested doing a search, I was met with "there should be only one" replies (kinda like Highlander...lol!) This person finally took my advice, did a search & found there were 3 win.com files on his PC, he renamed all of them, & was then able to do the upgrade.
Regardless, it doesn't hurt to do a search just to be sure

If you go th erenaming win.com route, then before doing this copy win.com to a floppy disk.
If things don't go well you can always copy the file back to its original location by starting from a Windows 98 FE boot disk.

My two cents worth.
I had Win98FE and acquired a Win98SE "Upgrade CD" that is actually for machines that have Win3x or Win95 installed.
With Win98FE up and running on the desktop I inserted the Win98SE Upgrade CD into the CD tray. It autoran.
I got a message that it found a previously installed OS and asked if I wanted to proceed anyway. (just like an XP installation)
I said yes and it installed.Note: during the hardware installation process it stalled and I had to restart, as noted on the screen, three times until it took.
Additional note: As with any OS installation it involves some post installation procedures. eg. reinstalling device drivers, DirectX, VB6 runtime files and all the Windows updates.
Otherwise all data files and installed programs remained intact. It was "Safe".
