This unknowing one wants to know if a Win98 USB 1 port can be upgraded to USB 2 using a PCI card?

I see a USB 2 port extension w/PCI card and was just wondering.

do give a computer with usb 1 usb 2 you have to buy a usb 2.0 pci card and put it in your system. they are pretty cheap. like under $20.

Win 98/98SE weren't spec-ed to use USB 2.0, but support can be added for USB 2.0. You can't upgrade existing USB 1.x ports on your mboard to USB 2.0, or existing USB 1.x cards to USB 2.0, but you can certainly get USB 2.0 cards that work with Win 98/98SE.

BE AWARE!!!!!!!!!!!!
If you do upgrade to USB 2.0, DO NOT plug in a USB 1.1 device to it. If you do, your 2.0 device might not work (voice of experience here).
PS if your upgrading to 2.0 for the mere fact of upgrading, think again. USB 2.0 cards will not make USB 1.1 devices work faster. The speed is for USB 2.0 devices only.

If it ain't broke upgrade it!!!

Hi All,

Thanks for taking the time to reply.

I thought I may be able to gain a little extra speed.

Guess I'll keep it the way it is. My set up runs 99% trouble free. Better not fix it.

Hi y'all

Hi Bob F,
I'm pretty sure you have to look into your MOBO specs..I was running win98 and installed a 4 port, 2.0 card..The card came with a driver disk...Think it was a Belkin...It threw my display way out of whack..all kinds of weird color lines and that sort of problem..It just would not install correctly..Pulled the card, and everything went back to normal..So, I think it was my MOBO specs, working against me..I reverted back to 1.1 and decided to be happy, using that:-)
Just a thought..

Hi, a freind of mine who uses win98 has just bought a digi camera with a usb (?? version) interface. He has asked me to install a card for it

The question is are both of the versions compatible with one another or not, ie if i put a 1 card in, and the device uses 2... will that work, and vice versa?

are most devices usb2 these days???

Sam

Most USB 2 devices are backwards-compatible, that is they'll work with a USB 1 interface on your PC, but slower, of course. It's just as well to check in the camera instructions or on the manuf. website though.

The other way round (USB 1 device connected to USB2 interface) is also designed to work in almost every case.

I've seen reports that even though USB 2.0 is supposed to be USB 1.x compatible, there are many devices meant for USB 1.x that will not work in them, yet they work fine in USB 1.x ports.

Another problem you may run into since you have a relatively old mboard is the USB compatibility of devices also depends on the PCI version spec. of your mboard - some newer USB 1.x and USB 2.0 devices other than most mice and keyboards may not work on this old mboard because of that, yet if you take the same USB card and stick it in a newer computer with a higher PCI spec, the device will work fine.
