Hi folks
i need some guidance here
i have a p3 700Mhz pc with 15gb quantom hdd
i would like to upgrade it to the maximum that the machine can support. How can i find the maximum (40/60/80/120gb) that my machine can support also the brand of hdd
i was considering maxtor, western digital or the same as quantom. The quantom hdd i have been using has not given me any probs for the last 4 years.
Please advise.thanks

What you want is an Overdrive CPU that will take you to around 200mhz, I do not think you can go to a 400mhz, but if find one on ebay it may be worth a punt, also your BIOS willnot support a larger hard drive without Drive Overlay Software which can be obtained from the Hard drive manufacturer.
It would be cheaper to by a PII 450mhz ex office desktop PC, in the UK around £90:00

Fred,
1.It is the BIOS & Operating System in the Computer that limit the Maxmum Hard Drive size.
2. The type of the BIOS is determined by the Make & Model of the Motherboard used in the PC. In the case of a Non-brand clone this information is known to the person who made it. The same information about Brand Name PC may be available at the Vendor's Technical Support Page.
3. To access information about Brand Name PC, one should have the EXACT Make and Model of the PC and NOT merely the name of the Manufacturer![Example "My Dell" or "My Compaq" is worthless information]
4.In some cases access, to the information will be provided only if the vendor's Serial Number displayed on a sticker either at the back or front of the Computer case is also typed in.[Example: Gateway/Dell PCs]
5. If your PC already has a a P3 with 700 MHZ & 15 GB HDD, most probably it can have any of the currently available large IDE HDDs with 7200/RPM. Posting the above Computer details will help us to be more certain.
Good luck with your upgrade.

Thanks MaadhuriMN

According to BIOSTAR Engineering Validation Test Report this MoB as is can support 33-66 ULTA ATA HDDs. You can view the BIOSTAR M6TWG MOTHERBOARD PDF file from here with your Acrobat Reader. My quick search did not reveal any upgraded BIOS at the BIOSTAR Tech support. You may search in detail.
From your Wipro Voyager documentation, it looks like you have a small capacity PSU with 145Watts. You must take that into account in any hardware upgrade although this HDD install may not affect it much if it is just replacing an original HDD.
If BIOSTAR has no BIOS Upgrade for a latger and Faster drive, you may try to install a an Ulta ATA/100 Controller card likePromise Ultra ATA /100 Controller PCI card in one of the 3PCI slots on your MoBo.

Thanksalot MaadhuriMN
i went through both the manual and the report
it is very informative. i learnt some things which i did not know. thanks for all the trouble u r takingbased on the reports i am searching for a model compatible hdd. i think i will stick to maxtor only but which model i do not know
your advice will be appreciatedone question though is udma ata 100 compatible with my machine? may be it runs at ata66 only ? please advise
i am refering to the following site
http://resellerratings.dealtime.com/xPP-Hard_Drives--maxtor-5_400___7_200_rpm-interface_dma_ata_66__ultra_~PG-2u can also go through it and post your findings here
thanks a lot again

From your Motherboard SPECS, as is , it can take HDDs of 33-66 Ultra ATA only. I had worked on similar machines but made by Compaq [Ex:Compaq Preasrio 4840)that originally came with a Compaq 6GB 3200RPM HDD ] Since Compaq offered no BIOS Upgrade [ The BIOS was not flashable] in order to install a WD WESTERN DIGITAL "SPECIAL EDITION" 80GB 7200RPM EIDE HARD DRIVE
I inserted an ULTRA100 TX2 ATA-100 EIDE PCI 2CH W2K/NT/WME/95/98 card to a free PCI slot and the fast HDD zipped through. If you search, you might find the card at even cheaper price than shown on the above link, somewhere else, and then install an 80 GB 7200RPM for a price lower than the HDDs you are looking at the site you posted. My personal philosophy of 'upgrade' is to take it to the most current proven technology so as not to become onbsolete within a few months!
