I recently upgraded a machine from WIN98 to WIN98SE. As the computer had alot of information on it, I decided to just upgrade over the existing os without reformatting the hard drive.

At first everything seemed fine but now I find short cuts to games (ChessMaster 5000, Microsoft Flight Simulator 2000) take up to 15 minutes to load (From clicking the icon on the start bar) or will not load at all.

Any ideas pls ? could it be a possible registry conflict (win 98 v win 98 se) or a directx issue ?

thanks

DK10.

Run a defrag. I would reinstall those programs just to make sure they all work properly.

Have you tried deleting the old links crated in Win98 and making new ones? Does that help? If not, something didn't load right. You may need to reinstall Win98SE.

I've upgraded many times and never had this problem.

Good Luck

Try deleteing shelliconcache. Use find to locate it.

If you are uncomfortable deleting it then just move it to another folder such as My Documents until you are satisfied and then delete it from there.

You may have to restart more than once for it to restore itself.

Back up your data<--first rule to reinstalling OS.
If you have followed this rule there is no need to upgrade and you can format then clean install the OS.

there is a way to upgrade your win 95 or win 98 to win98 se so that none of ur programs, documents and drivers get effected:
BOOT WITH A WIN98 STARTUP DISK
CHOOSE: startup with CD rom support
go to c:\windows
rename win.com to w.com
run setup from CD and when it asks u what directory u want to install in (it will give u 2 options: C:\WINDOWS000 and OTHER) Choose other and change the directory from C:\WINDOWS000 to C:\WINDOWS and continue setup.
THIS WILL HELP U TO SAVE ALL UR PROGRAMS AND DRIVERS!!!
hope this helps!
