I recently updated a friends computer to the latest (and last, for Win95) version of Windows Media Player. But now, mpeg videos he used to be able to play from a CDROM at fullscreen with no problems, play choppy and the audio is not synchronized with the video. Playing the same videos in a window play just fine.

Would an update to Media Player cause this? If so, is there any way to revert back to an older version of Media Player, or even install old MPEG codecs? I've thought about just running the Win95 disc again and reinstalling over the top, but I'm not sure if that would actually revert Media Player back to it's original version or not. Any help would be most appreciated!!

Just a guess guys,

is the P-166 now too slow to handle these jobs?

{dont read me wrong here, am a full time supporter of 'slow, old' PCs}

I found WMP 9 slow on Win98 than it is on XP on the same h/w. Does this mean the win9x kernel is ehh....not okey with WMP?

Zzep, have u tried copying the mpeg to the HD and running it?

but I'm not sure if that would actually revert Media Player back to it's original version or not.

No it would not. The newer WMP will still be there. Also IF u want to 'remove' it, then go ahead and uninstal it the same way u uninstal any other program using the add/remove programs from the control panel.

just my bit,

Yeah, my first thought was that the P-166 was the main problem. The problem with that hypothesis is that the mpegs worked fine BEFORE I updated WMP. Whatever version of WMP that came with Win95b originally was playing them fullscreen with no problems. That's why I was hoping to reinstall that old version or at the very least install the old codecs involved.

No, I haven't tried copying them to the HD yet. I can try it, but that still doesn't explain why they were fine before the WMP update and choppy afterward.

I was afraid of that. Win9x probably just looks for any missing files and replaces them during a reinstall, doesn't actually replace existing files.

I thought WMP was "Un-uninstallable"?? When I check my Win2k machine, I know there is no listing in the Add/Remove list for WMP. Is it the same in Win95?

usually there is a back version of WMP still on the harddisk. i found this when i installed a new WMP, but i didnt like the interface etc. i couldnt uninstall it, so i just made the old player the default for all the file types. it was located in c:\windows i think, called mplayer2. check to see if there are any back versions hidden around, use those (hold shift and right click the file, select "open with") and see if that solves your problem.

Further to #3's thoughts.

Have a look in:

c:\program files\windows media player

You should find both old and new there.
