I keep getting errors when I go to windows update and I can't seem to find the solution to fix it. Is there other sites that I can try to get updates?

There are other sites where you can get the actual files (quite handy).

Best answer Jennifer's question first though - hopefully it can be fixed.

This is the error message: Windows update has encountered an error and cannot display the requested page. The windows update services are temporarily unavailable. Please try again later". I tried every web site that I could find, posted this problem before and tried every suggestions. I been trying to fix this problem for months.

No it isn't quite, waive your mouse over the two links and you'll see the difference. If you could get there you would find that the site heading was differenet too. Mine was to "catalog".

Anyhow, can I take it that mine didn't work either?

Anytime - thx for confirmation.

Mel
Have you tried going on there at the lowest possible security level (just to prove the point that there is not something inhibited in your IE).

Did you used to get onto Windows Update?

Did the problem occur about 6 months ago (when they introduced v4 changes to updates)?

Do you remember them giving you the v4 update when they changed their system?

Have you got these two files in c:\windows\system
iuctl.dll
iuengine.dll

If the update to their website did not take I don't fancy our chances of getting humpty together again. Just the same I'm willing to persue it with you a bit further if you are interested.

I ordered the Update CD on 4/24 and got it the other day. They said it would take 6-8 weeks but..

I haven't tried it because I am up to date but it alledgedly includes all updates through Feb 04.

http://www.microsoft.com/security/protect/cd/order.asp to get a free copy. (If you can get to that link) There are no scripts on that page such as the Update page has.

Regards,
Bryan

Derek, I used to be able to get the updates from the site. Can't remember how long ago this problem started. I don't think it's been 6 months. I have another computer and I don't have a problem with that one using the same OS.
Bryan, I just got that update CD you're taking about and installed the updates from it. But I still can't scan for updates from the windows update site.

It seems therefore that there is a problem on that particular computer. I'm assume other websites work OK. Are those two files present?

Having said that, as far as I know there will be no more W98 updates, so now you have the CD the only thing you might get/want from Windows Update (if you could get there) would be IE6 Updates.

Here's another URL that could be useful:
WINDOWS CORPORATE UPDATES

This should prove the point because it does not use the v4 (automated) update facility. Still happy to look further into that if you wish....

Delete all instances of iuctl.dll and iuengine.dll you can find. Then re-visit the WU site using this secure link that SHOULD force WU to reinstall it's ActiveX Windows Update Software as it's sometimes called. This should get your registry modified such that you can once again find it and use the site.
ehh....Set your time, day, and year even it's right.

If you currently can't use ANY secure site then you'll have to get that fixed before you should expect WU site to load for you.

Thanks, Derek. Hacking around is fine IF it works, but getting WU to work again has a dozen or more other fixes that haven't even been touched on yet. If there were a hack for it, I'd be first in line.
