Comment:

A new install of Win98 automatically launches a c:\program window. I have used regedit to try and find and remove the reference, but it doesn't seem to be there. Any ideas how to get the system to start without this window?

Thanks

msconfig will tell you everything that is run at startup. You can Run msconfig and find out what is running and either uncheck what you don't want to run (easy method) or from their information maybe figure out what is causing it to run at startup and disable it there.

my guess (because it has always been so when i've had this problem) is that you use a Swedish system (or another language that has a "C:\Program" folder) and use some English program that tries to start at boot and that program is in "C:\Program Files" folder, is this correct?

because windows really isn't so keen on having spaces in pathnames, it tries to open two things: "C:\Folders" and "Files\what-ever-path-there-is-to-your-program" check in the registry and autoexec.bat file, then wherever you see that path you put quotes (") around it. I'm not exactly sure where in the registry windows checks for start-up files, but you should be able to find it somewhere.

Check out the link below for the 8 different ways to automatically launch a program at start-up.
You should find the culprit in one of those places.
