Somehow, my registry has been infected with spyware. I have tried spybot and a few other programs. They found nearly 1,000 bad items, but I keep getting an Adult Links Daily icon that keeps reappearing on my desktop and in my start menu. Can anybody tell me how I can get rid of this? Also have a couple outside dialers that I can see only when I run msconfig. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, Bill

Bill, when icons start appearing on your desk top out of the blue ,it's the sign of a virus infection. My advice is that instead of wasting hours or days finding the viruses and scratching-around how to get rid of them save what you can------ pictures or documents but word docs. are famous for containing viruses so watch out -------on a disk and delete everything from your hardrive with a bootdisk, hope you have one and reinstall the operating sys. fresh ,it's only half an hour an hour most.If you don't know the procedure let me know i'll explain step-by-step. That's nonsense, you don't have to reinstall your operating system. There's plenty of programs and help to solve the problem.
Download and run the Shredder as suggested, also download and run SpyBot, it looks for ad/spyware.
How to use Spybot:
1. Click on 'Online' in the navigation bar,
2. Click on 'Update',
3. Search for available updates,
4. Select ALL available updates,
5. Select a download location nearest to you, USA
6. Download the selected updates.
Updates will be installed without any further action needed.

Next, close all Internet Explorer windows, hit 'Check for Problems', and have SpyBot remove/fix all it finds that are in RED

Clean up the system also (this is for 98 and ME but should be close for XP)
Open up IE, from the drop down menu choose Tools, Internet Options, Delete Temporary Internet Files and cookies. (cookies optional)
Go to Start, Run, type temp , delete all the files in that folder
Do the same for recent
Delete all the .tmp and .chk files you can find. To do so, click Start/Find and in the search box (field) type *.tmp and this will search for all your temporary files. Repeat for chk files by typing *.chk in the search field, make sure you are looking in 'C'. Empty recycle bin.

If problem still exist, run a HiJackThis scan and post it back here.

It doesn't sound like a virus - more like intrusive spyware / hijackers like Mr. Charlie says. Of course a thorough virus scan would be a good idea after you run Spybot again and HijackThis. These programs, along with AdAware are good at tracking down these sorts of things, even in far depths of the registry.

StartupCop (freeware by JonesSoft) can help you see which programs are configured to run automatically at boot, and can even remove them.

Re-installing Windows, drivers, other software, and configuring everything to the way you had it before is more like an afternoon than a "half hour."

You should also be aware that having these types of files on the computer are often a result of "operator error." Hopefully you have a firewall now. And stop pressing the Yes button when asked if you wish to install porn software...

Best Wishes,
Bob

He should have a spyware finder installed regardless of whether or not he reinstalls the OS. Besides, the software titles I listed are very easy to use and require little or no setup/customization.
