Often when I boot up my win95 notebook, I get the error msg "ERROR: HIMEM.SYS has detected unreliable XMS memory. XMS Driver not installed."
I'm then prompted to hit enter to continue loading Windows, after which I get the msg "HIMEM.SYS is missing... press Ctrl-Alt-Del to restart." But restarting just brings me back to the same place.

I find this always happens after I have left my notebk idle for a long time, then try to reboot. What should I do? Thanks in advance.

Cal

After I had built my first desktop about a year ago, the same messages came up. It did not crash although
I had no idea what was happening, so I took the clone into a computer repair store. The techs had it for about 6 weeks and finaly came up with a compatability issue, with my video card. In my case it was happening about 1 in 4 or 5 bootups. I had them install a different brand [known compatible], and this has not happened again.
I hope this may give you some insite, Doug

The unreliable XMS memory message usually means faulty ram or external cache. However in your case (laptop, rebooting) there may be a different explanation and fix, see:
