Recently changed motherboard, cpu, memory on my AT computer to Celeron 400. Machine was working fine but after 3 weeks, Windows98 just froze. Message I got on the screen is that XMS unreliable at site 200086. Is this a function of software or hardware? Appreciate a prompt response to this problem. Thanks...

Check your memory simms one of them may became bad, try to load himem.sys as an device driver in the config.sys file and reboot and see there is any message being given by himem if it gives then you have a bad set of simms.

celeron 400 must have pc100 compliant memory and a bus speed of 100mhz. also bios must be set correctly - check the manual if in doubt.
it might also be worth checking any fans are spinning round (easily missed this!)and that the heatsink on the cpu is firmly attached.
