though disabled (to be able to install a second sound card without problems of interference of board one) of course windows still finds it, for it still is present

Hi,
Just a thought, but this notice being displayed could be refering to your "Legacy audio Creative Sound Blaster 64V" that is in computer. Check in the device manager to see if your SB is showing up. You may have to run the setup files for the card.
If the house catches fire, SAVE the computer!!

Install the driver for it and the message will no longer come up.
You can have (and use) multiple audio adapters. Select which one to use in the Control Panel > Multimedia > Audio > Preferred device.

Thanks to each of you who have so promptly
replied to this call for HELP!Please let me clarify this item.
After completing all devices...Device Manager
has ALL drivers installed with no problem. This includes Legacy Creative Sound Blaster!I now have
sound(MS Sound for sure.)Rebooting always shows PCI Multimedia Device
found. It is puzzling me!Many thanks!

I believe that you still need to run a "setup" install file for the SB card. I have one in my computer, and that notice, along with about four others come up when I put the card in or re-burn my drive. I have always had to run a setup to get rid of all them pop-ups. Go to Diamonds home page and d/l the newest driver set, which will be an install file, not just the drivers for sound, but for two or three other 'devices' that these cards contain.

If it's showing up as a 64V, you've probably got a 1370 chipset. I've used 7502533.exe to install those drivers dozens of times and never had a problem.
First open the case to make sure that's your chipset. If so, download and run that file. Running the downloaded file will extract the files to c:\cabs\7502533. Run the setup command from there.

DAVEINCAPS thanks for the above entry! Belarc Advisor list as 64V; however Gateway 7505358 file is recommended.
IC chip displays Creative ES1371 on board. Update scan list SoundBlaster 128D not installed...file downloaded and installed...
wrong one!Finalized SETUP by flashing BIOS, installing
7505358 file & disabling "PCI Multimedia Device?" in Device Manager.Computer operating normal!
Conclusion:I will buy no "namebrand" computer! Thanks EVERYONE!

Yeah, 7505358.exe should be the correct file for the 1371 chipset. I've had very good results using gateway supplied drivers. Gateway cards have a part number on the back. You can go to their site and enter the part number and find the drivers.
One thing I've noticed with soundblaster is if the incorrect drivers are installed first, a second installation of the correct drivers sometimes doesn't clear things up.

DAVEINCAPS thanks for your replies. A scan by
GATEWAY did not find audio device installed??
They appeared to be searching for one that had 128D? I tried that file and it did not like it.One question: where would I find MB indentifier number. Two MB were listed; one ending in 264 & the other ending 321?? I could not find that on MB.
Thanks again for your most helpful replies!
Regards!

Hey J2 and DAVEinCAPS !!
J2,
Is your 1371 audio card a PCI card or is it an ISA card?IF it is a PCI Card, I might have the drivers you need. My PIONEX computer, that I bought in like 1997, come with a SB card. BUT, when I have to reinstall my drive, and get the drivers from the drivers CD, The one I use, is actually labeled "Ensoniq PCI 1371". Though, after it is all installed, in device manager it comes up as a "Creative Sound Blaster AudioPCI 64V". I tried Pionex's web site, cause they use to have drivers still there, even though they weren't in business anymore. But the site either wasn't working, or they had finally shut it down. Either way, if you would like to try the drivers files I have, let me know and I can zip um up from the CD and e-mail them to you.

Sean, I think J2's sound chip is on-board. I'm sure the 1371 would be considered PCI even though it was on-board. As I recall, the gateway drivers (at least for the 1370) specified it was for both an add-on card and on-board.
I'm not sure where the gateway part number is located on the motherboard. However there should be a gateway serial number on the back of your case as well as on the side or top of the case. You can go to gateway's site and enter that number and it should lead you to a page with all available downloads.

Dave,
I was just under the assumption that he had an add-on board, cause of his comment about "Audio disabled in BIOS". If that's the case, then his board wouldn't be a Gateway installed. I would think that they would have use the on MB audio from factory.

Yeah, I'd forgotten J2 had said it was disabled. Either it's now enabled (maybe because of the bios upgrade) or as ding mentioned in #1 above, the OS is still seeing it or, as you say, maybe there's an additional add-on sound card.
J2, can you clear this up? If the device is disabled in cmos, the drivers aren't going to work properly even if 98 sees something there.

Hey Dave,
I am thinking, only from personal experiences dealing with this card, I can get mine to "work" and play sound even though all the drivers for all the 'internal' devices on the card are not installed. Going off of recollections from a while ago, seems like it installed things like MIDI, game port, the main sound, and one or two other devices. I am suspecting that not all the drivers were installed for it. Either way, your last recommendation to J2, would be good info, so were all talking on the same level here. Yeah, just from what J2's informed to us so far, it was sounding like he had the MB audio disabled, and had a SB sound card installed.
J2,
After looking at one of your previous posts where you mentioned. "IC chip displays Creative ES1371 on board", the "ES" would more than likely be the "Ensoniq" card, which IS a 'Creative' made card. try this site to get the drivers, and let us know if it worked out for you!
This link should start to d/l the drivers file automatically for you.
If the house catches fire, SAVE the computer!!

Yeah, I've had that problem also with some of the older creative cards. Although the 98 disk had the drivers and would set up the card, you'd be left with an 'unknown device' in device manager. The sound card would work just fine so you had no idea it was associated with the card. But if you ran the 95 update from creative's site the 'unknown device' would disappear.
I'm fairly certain the chip will be an ensoniq chip. Although I don't think I've set up a 1371, I have set up the 1370 and 1373 using the appropriate drivers from gateway's site, and they were both ensoniq chips. Creative and Ensoniq had an on-again off again relationship and their chip names were often intermingled.

Thanks to all for your input. I do NOT have
a sound card! It has MB built in sound. One of
the scans(System Info, Belarc or Everest) has
identified it as Ensoniq 1371.Gateway scan could not find a sound installed
even though ALL devices in DEVICE Manager was
NORMAL! It suggested a 128D sound program (16MB+) that was NOT installed. I did install the file which did NOT work.Re MB question: Gateway scan listed two choices for MB, one being ....264 & other one
....321. I was unable to find these numbers, however I think I tried both MB files listed.Presently EVERYTHING is operating Normal with the exception it will ALWAYS find a
PCI Multimedia Device, which I have disabled!I trust I have clarified my problem. Again, thanks to everyone!

I need to add one other clarification remark.
The on board sound is working perfectly. Only problem is the computer always finds this additional device which shows up in Device Manager in OTHER DEVICE with a yellow
question mark, which I have disabled.Sean, I have downloaded your file and will try it. Thanks for providing it!
Regards

Hey J2,
I think now that you provided eben more clarification, things are looking more viable toward a solution. Guess my main confusion in this was related to your first post, where you had mentioned "Audio disabled in BIOS". If your card IS integrated into the MB, this should be "ENABLED", not 'disabled'. The other portion that 'may' be confusing to you, is that a sound card has more than 'one' segment to it internally. For reference, in my device manager, under 'sound, video and game controllers', I have listed , 'Creative Sound Blaster AudioPCI 64V', AND 'SB AudioPCI 64V Legacy Device', in addition to the 'Game Port'. All of these require seperat drivers to be installed for them all to function properly. I.E., if I didn't install, say the game port, which may be one of the devices that would be recognized as a mulltimedia device, my sound would fuction correctly., though I would be un able to use a joystick. In addition to the 3 I listed that are part of the ES1371 card, there are also other devices in the card like a MIDI player/decoder that also need the drivers installed, or else windows WILL KEEP asking for the drivers to be installed. Because they are all in the same device, if yours IS the same as mine, only MB integrated, that file I linked for you should take care of ALL the devices in this unit. Just let us all know! Thanks for keeping us informed so far, as we are very willing to give support as we are able to!

If the house catches fire, SAVE the computer!!

FINAL ENTRY: First of all let me thank everyone who assisted me in this effort! In order to assist anyone else who may read this thread in the future I will now summarize what I have learned from this problem. Going back to my entry in Response #7 and read the following:
1. On Board audio DISABLED in BIOS becomes invisible in future boot-ups.
2. Missing sound drivers or problems will be indicated in Device Manager under Sounds, etc.
3. I should have removed all PCI cards except Video Adapter to begin search! When I begin inspecting computer I noticed PCI card connected to Video card. This card turned out to be the following: PCI Multimedia Device found!!!
“Gateway driver - Gateway Storage Drivers - 7504104.exe... Used as a DVD controller in old Gateways. Part number is 6000658. STB card# 210-0307-001.
Comments This card mfr'd by STB. Used as a DVD controller in old Gateways. Part number is 6000658. STB card# 210-0307-001.”This card was removed; solving all my problems! Special thanks to DAVEINCAPS and Sean! All of you are very much appreciated!
Regards, J2

For future reference, to find drivers for gateway cards go here:
On the right side of the screen, under 'find downloads', enter the part number and click the 'part number' option to locate the drivers. The drivers, of course, will work just fine when the card is used in a non-gateway computer.
So if you entered 6000658 you'd get the drivers for that DVD card.

DAVEINCAPS
I did download driver for 6000658 and installed it to verify operation. I then removed card since it was no longer needed.
Again, I appreciate your help since this was really my first experience with Gateway.
Regards!
