i have a acer aspire amd6 runing windows 95 32 ram if other spec are needed please just ask the problem is when in device manager double click computer then click veiw resources input/output. i see settings in use by unknown device. is this harmful to my pc? is there a way of finding out what the unknown device is

Yes, go to device manager highlight unknown device then click remove. Restart your pc. Once your system has booted it should detect a new device and should tell what type of device it is. I think that your system does not have the drivers for this device. when windows does not find a driver for a device it will list it as "Unknown"

i just found another problem in multimedia devices under advanced tab i clicked midi devices and instruments clicked midi for wavstream synthesizer clicked properties and the status reads driver is enabled but inactive due to unknown problem but this device list no driver tab.. i think i did something wrong but don't know what...

to anon sorry i posted before i got a chance to read your message in device manager there is no unknown device to hightlight and remove. i found this unknown device listing as i described in my first post

You have an acer pc. You could extract drivers from your restore cd that came w/your pc.Remove the multimedia devices and reboot your system your system should detect new HW and follow the prompts

ok thank for the advice yes i have a acer software and recovery disk i wil try the quick fix which restores factory settings lol duh why didn't i think of this. if it works i be back online to post to you if not well that's how it goes and i will need to choose the rebuild option i hope i don't have to do that wish me luck

I did not mean for you to restore your system. I merely stated to extract the drivers from the restore CD. When your system detect your multimedia device let window try to find the driver make sure that you check cd-rom box. if it does not find it click on have disk and then browse open up the driver folder in the restore cd and then look for the sound card drive.

ok i got you remove the driver causing the problem and then use find new harware click find and use the A drive browse for the driver on the recovery disk and update i can do that. :-)
