Ok this is a Dell Dimension that came with 98SE and then dell sent us a Windows Me Upgrade cupon back in 2000. Anyway i remember back then upgradeing to Windows Me. This computer has been just sitting in a closet scence 2002. It was my grandparents computer. My aunt got it and sent it to me its hardly been used maybe once or twice. But anyway i uninstalled Windows Me bacause i hate it. When i start the computer i hear the Windows Me sound and not the 98 defalt sound. Thats wierd how many things did the uninstall leave? How do i get out EVERYTHING from Windows ME. Im ready to do a dirty install just maybe someone has some suggestions first.

BTW 98SE runs better ive done eveything i know to do to tweak Windows Me. And also i have some DOS games i want to play that don't work with Win Me. I got another computer exactly like this one with Windows 2000 Pro and this computer runs best with 98 or 2000.

I'm not gonna try to convince you otherwise then.

I suggest you back up any important files, then format the HDD & do a clean install of 98. Make sure to get all the necessary drivers together beforehand. Once Win98 & the device drivers are installed, tweak the settings for best performance, then go online & run Windows Update.

Ok well there is no need for a clean install. Like i said the computer was bought in 2000 and was used like once or twice because my grandparents went in personal care home and now there both deceased. The PC has been in there old house scence 2003 and was only used once or twice and was on the internet once in 2000. The computer has just been sitting on a desk unplugged and hasn't been touched just dusted off. I got the computer cleaned it out inside the dust wasn't much still very clean inside because case had a dust cover. This computer is like new no clicks in HD or anything. I installed 98SE over 98SE im going to see how it runs now. Im not doughting you on Windows Me im sorry ive just never had any luck with it.

Thanks

If I'm reading correctly, you have a 20 & 40 gig drives. You mentioned 98 & 2000, why not run both?

I got another computer exactly like this one back in 2000 i bought 2 of these. One for me and one for my grandparaents. mine still works also. Both came with 98SE with a cupon for both to get a discount on upgrade Windows ME. My uncle upgraded to Windows ME on the one my grandparaents had and they used it. I did not like Windows ME so back then i reformatted the drive and went and bought 2000 Pro. So now i get there old computer they thought it was the right thing to do scence i gave it to them. So now it rund good and ive done a install over 98 seems to work good now. I do have the recovery CD though if anyhting strange happens also i got a real 98 and 98SE CD.

Nice lot of chat but I'm now rather lost as to what the question is or whether there even is one anymore.

The question is. How many things did uninstalling Windows Me leave? Somethings must havbe not been fully deleted when i uninstalled Windows Me from device MGR. Someone posted a link on how to remove Windows Me but all i got was page cannot be found. The reason i asked this was because i hear the Windows Me logon sound instead of the 98 logon sound at startup. I did a 98 install on top of 98 and maybe then fixed all the problems. Also did a disk cleanup with norton systemworks and found 47 MB can be freed. Maybe im all set now. This is like a new machine and its worh more to me than i paid for it. I up a 40 gig drive in a ghosted everything over and i use the 8 gig as a slave.

What do i put here if i don't put a question?

I doubt anyone can tell you "how many".

It may have just left the .wav file in situ for the ME default sound which is no big deal. You can soon change that in the Control Panel and also delete the file if you wish.

Otherwise, you could search the registry for entries and look for files with the exact date/time of the ME product I suppose. If you have faith in registry cleaners then maybe running those could help too.

If you are still bothered then it would be better and safer to do a clean install as jam suggested.

Sure, you can't edit "after posting" but you can bring it back as many times as you like before the final posting to see what it is going to look like. This gives you a fair chance of editing out the more obvious slip-ups.

"How do i get out EVERYTHING from Windows ME"

Clean install - to make a long story short... oh, nevermind, too late for that

I'm not one of those who think Bill Gates is the devil. I simply suspect that if Microsoft ever met up with the devil, it wouldn't need an interpreter
