whoo, Follow the instructions below.

Manual Uninstall of McAfee VirusScan 6.0 (Windows 9x/ME only)

Attempt an Automatic Uninstall

Click on the Start button.
Highlight Settings then click on Control Panel. The Control Panel will then appear.
Double click on the Add/Remove Programs icon. The Add/Remove Programs Properties dialog box will then appear.
Locate McAfee VirusScan (or just VirusScan) on the list of installed programs and single-click on it so it is highlighted.
Click the Add/Remove button.
NOTE: If at any time you are prompted to remove shared files, answer Yes To All.
Windows will then attempt to remove McAfee VirusScan from your computer. If the operation is successful you will need to restart your computer. If McAfee VirusScan is successfully uninstalled you do not need to complete the remaining steps in this document. If you receive error messages or find that McAfee VirusScan was not completely removed then follow the steps below to manually remove the program.
Run MSIEXEC to Attempt a Forced Uninstall

Click on the Start button.
Highlight Programs then click on MS-DOS Prompt. A black window will then appear on the screen with a blinking cursor.
Type the following commands into the keyboard:
CD \
CD C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM
MsiExec.exe /X{87AEFD84-BC0D-11D4-B885-00508B022A51}
exit
If the operation is successful you will need to restart your computer. If McAfee VirusScan is successfully uninstalled you do not need to complete the remaining steps in this document. If you receive error messages or find that McAfee VirusScan was not completely removed then follow the steps below to manually remove the program.
Manually Removing McAfee VirusScan

IMPORTANT: Before beginning to remove McAfee VirusScan manually from your computer be sure to backup the Registry. This will safeguard your Windows installation. You can recover your Windows configuration by restoring the backup if something goes wrong.

The instructions in this document will guide you through deleting specific items from your computer. If you are instructed to delete an item that you cannot find, skip that step and continue with the next step. Some steps may not be applicable to your installation of VirusScan.

Backup the Registry

Click on the Start button.
Click on Run.
Type in REGEDIT then click the OK button. The Registry Editor will then appear.
Click on the Registry pull-down menu then click on Export Registry File.
The Export Registry File dialog box will then appear. The top of this dialog box contains an option entitled Save In. Make sure 'Desktop' is selected for the Save In option. If it is not, click the pull-down arrow and select 'Desktop' from the list.
In the File Name field type 'Backup' (without the quotation marks).
In the Export Range group box make sure 'All' is selected.
Click on the Save button.
NOTE: If you need to restore the Registry you can double-click on the 'backup' file you created and it will be restored. However, once you have finished these instructions and are certain everything is working properly it is important to delete the 'backup' file you created. Do this by right-clicking on the Backup file on the desktop then left-clicking on Delete from the pop-up menu that appears. This will ensure that the old registry is not accidentally restored once this process is complete.

Delete the Registry Keys

NOTE: The following steps may be more easily followed if you close and reopen the Registry Editor between each step. My computer hung up when I was removing McAfee a couple of months ago. I was then unable to get on our network. To solve this, I booted into safe mode by pressing f8 when the computer was starting. I then went into the control panel and selected add/remove programs and then removed it.

I agree with patrick. The manual uninstall si fine but you may be able to do the uninstall if you do it in safe mode. Be sure to re-check anything relating to McAfee that you have unchecked in msconfig first.

I just recently installed viruscan 6 and it didn't work because I didn't have the required dlls. Also, my graphics went bad and were really bad. I could only stay in the 16 colour mode in the display properties and my resolution was as large as it could go. When I uninstalled viruscan 6, my graphics went back to normal but now I keep getting these messages that pop up when I boot the system stating that "one of the library files needed to run this application was not found" and the file stated was a file called Avsmcpa.dll. Anyway, I now have a useless piece of $50 software and it doesn't work. Any ideas of what might be going on?

Thank you SO much for your help!! After I uninstalled, I kept getting these crap errors when I tried to load control panel. McAfee's Uninstall sucks, almost as much as ver. 6 does. Too bad, it's lower versions don't work with XP. But thanks for your help, I got those errors to go bye bye.

If all above did'nt work, rename the file Avsmcpa.cpl > Avsmcpa.dll and place it in one of the directory from the error message, that work for me.

well, wasn't too hard, considering he copied it from the McAfee-site ... Still McAfee uninstall did a poor job for me to. Manual removal of avsmcpa.cpl was required.
