I have checked the previous posts and can't find an answer to my query.
I recently tried to install XP Pro and chose upgrade when prompted in order to save the various settings etc. in Win98 SE. Got various error messages during XP setup and it wouldn't boot up when finished - suspect it was damaged install disk. In order to be able to use my machine I reinstalled Win98 SE but wasn't looking out when asked to select intallation directory so I now have C:\Windows and C:\Windows000. Because it thinks there are now 2 operating systems, XP (another install disk) will not let me choose upgrade. Uninstall is not available in Add/Remove programs and I would be grateful for any advice as to how to remove C:\Windows000. I would like to keep C:\Windows for the reasons mentioned and the maybe I will be able to upgrade to XP

Assuming you properly installed the second OS to a different drive, simply boot to the Original Win98 install and format the partition in question. If you installed both to the same partition then I recommend a total wipe of the drive. Keep in mind that if you install XP under a dual boot configuration you will need to use FAT32 for XP or you won't be able to access the XP partition while running 98. If both are on the same partition you could try to simply delete the second installation after backing up critical files. Not sure what the end result would be.

boot the machine into a command prompt only.
remove c:\windows.000 by typing
"deltree c:\windows.000" and pressing enter.(no quotes)
it will take some time, since it is a large folder.
now boot the machine with the win98SE CD and run setup, and install to c:\windows
since xp setup would have made a mess of your windows folder, i do not think it can be used as it is, without running setup.
my signature does not look like this

Hi Abdul
Tried your suggestion but keep getting error message "Bad command or file name". Have checked that the directory is correct.

First you need to find deltree.
dir c:\deltree* /s
Don't use the one in the tree you're going to delete.
c:\windows\deltree c:\windows.000
=====================================
If at first you don't succeed, you're about average.M2

Maybe copy the deltree command to the bootdisk first:
copy c:\windows.000\command\deltree.exe a:
and enter. Then:
deltree c:\windows.000
and enter. Then reinstall 98 to the original c:\windows directory.
