Comment:

My computer slows during use. I have a utility called fast defrag. This shows that my free physical memory drops to a very low number, 4-11 MB, but after defrag returns to 400+, only to drop again in a few hours. I have scanned with Adaware, Spybot to eliminate spyware, or what I could find. Any ideas on what is sucking up the RAM and why I need to defrag so frequently?

Thanks, Alan

Look at your swap file size setting. Right click My Computer> Properties> Performance> Virtual Memory> Set to let windows manage if it wasn't.

First, it is architecturally impossible for ram to be fragmented. Thus, it is impossible to defrag it.

Second, this program is one of those infamous apps that purports to "manage memory". Well, they can't.

See this link.

If you are running Low on Ram there are really only 2 solutions (given you are virus and spyware free).

1. Run fewer and/or smaller programs
2. Install more memory

Add this line:

ConservativeSwapfileUsage=1

to the [386Enh] section of your system.ini file.

Sometimes I wonder if all these memory usage monitoring utilities only exaggerate a minor problem or perhaps actually create the problem.

Many years ago I tried out various so called memory managers (the free ones) before I understood what they were about. Performance improved after I took them out. It is probably lumbering up your system - uninstall it.

The last time I tried one of these progs
that claim to free memory it claimed 3% of
my system resources to run it on an
AthlonXP2400+ {2gig} 512mb ram system on a
fresh startup.
I'd close the prog & instantly gain the 3%
back.
They realy are smoke & mirror tricks in my
opinion.
