Undocumented Setup switch
Name: TopFarmer Date: June 30, 2007 at 19:45:29 Pacific OS: 98 SE CPU/Ram: unk Product: pcchips/unk
Comment:
I have forgotten the SETUP Switch that disables the rewriting of the MBR during install of 98se. I use a third party boot/partition manager (plop) and do not wish to reinstall it also. Very difficult to get my 6 primary partitions re enabled. Any help with the switch would be appreciated.

You're welcome. I wasn't even aware an installation updated the MBR.

Unless you have a third party program in the MBR -DDO,boot manager,GoBack,Linux's grub or lilo- , one would never be aware of the fact. If one has any of the above using the IR switch would save them lots of time. Do not know if XP's install has the switch or not.

I didn't know installation updated MBR either. As some machines have a tailored MBR it makes me wonder why we haven't run into troubles before. Maybe we've been lucky.

It does , if I do not use the IR switch, my boot manager is toast. Could use MBRWORK and save a copy of the first track and then rewrite it. A Recovery CD might not do so. XP also will rewrite the MBR during install.
It is also why one must turn off the bios's MBR Virus detection or use the IR switch (?).

Worth knowing thx. I've always hesitated to suggest fdisk /mbr for that reason. Could account for one or two issues after install on here over the years I reckon.

Yeah, it's a good thing to know.
But with an overlay, it has to load before windows can be installed. If the OS install then turned around and essentially removed the overlay you'd never get windows to run. Since overlays have been around for quite awhile I'm sure Microsoft has made allowances for that factor. It could also be true that since the overlay software is running, the install leaves it alone. So I'm guessing a DDO is going to safe.
Of course that wouldn't necessarily apply to boot managers or third-party-created partitions which was TopFarmer's concern.
