Whenever I try on to log o to MSN Messenger I got following err message:

"We were unable to sign you in to the .NET Messenger Service, possibly because of a problem with your Internet connection. Please try again later."

I am able to visit any site and view all contents of the net so I think there is no problem with my connection. can anyone tell me why I am unable to log on to MSN and how can I solve my problem ?

Thanking you in advance !

have a look at this link at "Ask Marvin" site its pretty comprhensive on MSN problems:
"Friends;

I've compiled a list of known resources and fixes for those who really want their Messenger to work It's pretty comprehensive and covers a lot of common issues If the answer is not in here I'd be pretty surprised
Each section is divided by das--------

The first section is something I wrote on basic Messenger troubleshooting. It's vital to perform these steps and also deals with some important router issues. Start here and whatever you do - don't skip this step!

The second section is the Messenger Known Issues FAQ from Microsoft
It deals with all the common & not so common issues that Microsoft has discovered with regards to Messenger. If the first section of the FAQ doesn't fix your problem then this is the place to look.

The third section is a Microsoft White Paper on SOHO routers and Messenger. It's a good one for those who really want to understand how things work.

The fourth, and last section, deals primarily with problems logging in to Messenger/.NET Passport service. It's a short FAQ put together by Microsoft and is very handy for people encountering sign in problems."

no problem Dilip, I've had so many problems with MSN and this was one site I found. They seem to have a great comprehensive look at MSN problems.

Hi Dilip,

I really hope this helps you because I want someone else to benefit from what I found out...I hope this is an answer for you...I feel compelled to share it with at least one person so that they can feel a sense of relief as I did when I was once again able to make .Net Messenger run on my computer...

I assure you that this problem you are experiencing has nothing to do with your computer, unless you have a firewall...If you don't, please read on....

Like me Dilip, you will probably find that NOT ONE OF THE SOLUTIONS MARVIN OR MSN SUGGESTS REALLY WORKS!!! Thank all of those people for trying to be helpful but their answers are futile and won't work if Dilip's problem is exactly as he describes it here.....I'll bet you on that one if you want...

Like you Dilip, I was definitely connected to the 'net and able to use it to look at any website I pleased....Also, I could sign into .Net Passport with no problem..I checked my Lan connected, checked to make sure I wasn't running a false proxy, uninstalled and reinstalled, changed my password, etc., etc., etc., of their suggestions...RUBBISH AND COMPLETELY USELESS!!! I think they were trying to make me go bald on purpose. One thing is for sure, no one wants to admit it's a problem with the MSN server!!

I just kept getting this stupid hex code error message:

"We were unable to sign you into the .Net Messenger service, possibly because of a problem with the service or with YOUR Internet connection. Please make sure that you are connected to the Internet. 0x81000301."

My password was working fine and I was able to log onto .Net Passport very easily. There was nothing wrong with my password!!

I say this because I started getting the hex code error message:

"Sorry, we could not sign you in becaue the sign-in name you entered does not exist or your password is incorrect. If you have forgotten your password, please click 'Help'in the main Messenger window, and then click 'Help Topics' for instructions on resetting your password. 0x81000303."

I followed the instructions and
I RESET MY PASSWORD ABOUT 5 TIMES AND I STILL COULDN'T SIGN ON TO .NET MESSENGER 6.1!!! It was so unnerving...

Try this Dilip and see if it works...I found the answer at: Dylan Green dot com, and I can't find it on his site now to explain to you "why" this works...

Anyway, when you normally double-click on the .Net Messenger icon, the one with the two people standing together, they usually start spinning around each other and then the program opens up and tells you who of your pals is online...BUT, when you get either of those hex error code messages, you can't do a darn thing!

All right now...Go ahead and double-click on the .Net Messenger icon anyway, even though you know it won't open up for you...

When the icon stops spinning and either one of the hex error code messages I spoke about above pops in front of you, just hit OK to make it go away...Don't follow the instructions in the box because they won't work.

Now, once the hex error code message is gone from your screen, you should have a small screen with the two people standing on it, not doing a thing.

Across the top of that screen, you should see a series of words.

Look at the top left corner of THAT screen and you should see "FILE". Click on that once, and see the drop down box.

You'll see "Sign in as _______" and it will say whatever your sign-in name is...I have only one account so I only have this one name...You may have several...DO NOT PICK THIS OPTION!!

Underneath of the "Sign in as Dilip" option(s), you'll see the option, "Sign in...." WITHOUT A NAME INSERTED INTO IT.
CHOSE THAT ONE - the one with no name.

Now, when you do so a little box should pop up with a sign-in name already filled in, but the password box is left blank. Type in your appropriate password into that box. Remember that your password is case sensitive.

DO NOT PUT A CHECK MARK IN THE BOX, "Sign me in automatically." (I don't know what will happen if you do this!!)

Now, click OK, and VIOLA, your two folks should start spinning around each other and the program seems to magically open up for you!

I really hope this works for you Dilip! It worked for me and is STILL WORKING FOR ME, but I'm not a computer techie so I can't tell you why it works..

Please pass this along to all of your friends, or anyone you know that is having problems logging on to .Net Messenger and none of the suggestions by Marvin or MSN are working for them either..

It will make you feel good, I promise!

I am not going to post my e-mail address here, although this website owner now has it and I assume I will soon be getting a bunch of spam e-mail that I don't want...

Please someone, if you can tell me now how to UNSUBSCRIBE to this Computing.net website, please tell me!

Dilip, I would like to know if this helped you...Perhaps I can do search on this site called, ".Net Messenger Problem" and find your reply?

Have a great day!
-Ciccia

Well, guys!

Thank u all for your advice and your time u spent to solve my problem. but like Holli said nothing worked and finally One of my friend suggested me to see my internet settings.
I checked and that worked fine. Here is what I did :

Right click the internet explorer>>Properties>>Advance>> and under the "Security" menu I put a check mark on :

Use SSL 2.0
Use SSL 3.0

Now it is working fine. Well I don't know how those two options were unchecked and what that stands for but my problem is solved and I hope other people having same problem may benefit from it so I am posting it here again.

Thank u all once more

Dilip

Dilip,

Thanks for the info. I've been having the same problem, but it just suddenly started a few days ago. I went through everything you did. I was finally able to sign in using the "sign in" option, but still can't sign in like I used to. I even checked the SSL options (they were already checked) to no avail. I thing Microsoft screwed up again. By the way, it's not just messenger 6.1. I had 4.7 installed when the problem started, so I upgraded and still have the problem. Typical MS crap software. GO LINUX!

Hi everyone!

Recently I contacted MSN about the problem we have been discussing and the answer I got from them is given below:

Hope it may work for some of us.

Please come back and let us know if anything mentioned below helps you.

Dilip

____________________________________________
This is the reply I got from them:

The problem you are experiencing may be caused by either of the following:

- Microsoft .NET Passport settings are incorrect
- Firewall settings are blocking MSN Messenger
- Security settings are blocking MSN Messenger

To resolve your issue, here are some things to try:

1. If the computer runs third-party or firewall software like Zone Alarm,
make sure the software is set to allow Messenger to operate, and then try to
sign in to MSN Messenger again. For additional information, refer to your
third-party software manual or online help.

2. If the previous step did not resolve the issue, update Internet
Explorer to the latest version. Visit http://microsoft.com/windows/ie/, and
then click Download now.

3. If the previous step did not resolve the issue, adjust your Internet
Explorer security settings:

a. Start Internet Explorer.
b. On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.
c. Click the Advanced tab.
d. Under Security, do the following:

1. Clear the Check for server certificate revocation (requires
restart) check box.
2. Select the Use SSL 2.0 check box.
3. Select the Use SSL 3.0 check box.

e. Click OK.

4. If the previous step did not resolve the issue, adjust the proxy
settings in Internet Explorer:

a. Start Internet Explorer.
b. On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.
c. Click the Connections tab, and then click LAN Settings.
d. Clear the Automatically detect settings check box.
e. Click OK, and then click OK again.

5. If the previous step did not resolve the issue, adjust the proxy
settings in MSN Messenger:

a. Start MSN Messenger.
b. On the Tools menu, click Options.
c. On the Connection tab, clear the I use a proxy server check box. Do
not select this option unless your network administrator advises you to.
d. Click OK, and then click OK again.

In addition, I suggest that you download the latest version and build of
MSN Messenger that is 6.1.0207. To do this, please go to
http://messenger.msn.com.
