I did the f8 thingy and there were no errors as for the "rem"ing, there was nothing to rem! (see my thread in archive 50for the stuff that I have tried)
Thanks :-)

Please post your CONFIG.SYS file. Any other config file is a old backup. If config.sys is ok, and you can run dos programs before windows starts (chose command prompt only at startup) Try this: start, run, type "command" without the quotes. Also try start, find, type " *.pif' and double click on dosprmpt.pif amd exit to dos.pif and Ms dos prompt.pif . If the screen goes blank type exit and hit enter key should go back to windows

I have tried your suggestions:
Ms-dosprompt =(sometimes) open window w/white screen (title of screen= RgCrtKey)and message that reads:
"This program cannot run in window because of the way it uses the display.
Press Alt+Enter to run the program in a full screen.".
After following the directions, nothing happens. If I try to close the screen in any other way (Ctr+Alt+Del or hit the little 'X' at the top-right of the window, the computer reboots!
Exit to Dos= (See above)
I am able to run dos programs BEFORE windows starts.Config.sys is posted in archive 50 on this site aling with other info. To make things easier, here it is again (I hope it turns out 'OK'. I am doing a copy-and-paste thing :-) ):"Comment:
Help! Dos prompt is failing to operate in win95b on my

click on the minimized window, the screen goes black,
computer freezes, monitor automatically shuts down.
TJhere are still lights on on my tower. No automatic
reboot when this happens, just freeze. Dos programs?
exactly the same thing happens. I am able to run dos
programs at the dos prompt before windows kicks in.

Reply:Try this- make a boot disk in add/remove programs, start
up disk. When windows asks for the cd to make the disk
it also refreshes the dos emulator files. It worked for me

"Hi there. I have tried using my boot disc, just for kicks

All I get, in both scenarios, is an a: prompt! Even when

"One danger when installing a 3.1 program on win95 is it
will write to your configeration files. Win95 auto loads
himem and path and dos high ect so rem out these lines.
It is normal to find backup copys of config.sys such as
conf.old or config.bak . config.sys is the active file. To
make shure the start up files are loading corectly hit f8 at
start up and choose step by step confermation. Check
for any error messages as each driver loads "REPLY

Use the find function to find ms DOS prompt.PIF and right click on it and choose properties. In screen tab initial size should be 25 lines and select full screen. In memory tab every choice should be set to auto. In font tab font size should be auto. In advanced program settings chose prevent ms DOS programs from detecting windows

screen tab:
I set the initial size to 25 (it was not set to this).
I selected full screen (changed from window)
Memory tab:
Everything is set to auto (no changes made)
Font tab:
I set to true type and bitmap (these were my only options)and auto (no changes made)
Advanced:
I chose 'prevent ms-dos from detecting windows" unchecked 'suggest as neccesary' (both were checked)Lets see if this works. I will let you know if it works or any error messages I recieve. You have been so patient. It is appreciated :-) Thx.

I changed what you suggested, same thing happens--black screen, freeze, monitor shuts off--- all in about that order. Had to reboot. :-(

Do you have matrox MGA power desk installed? Start , programs, MGA power desk, Diagnostics. Do you get the message that the MGA driver is not currently in use? Right click on my computer and choose properties, device manager, display adapter, matrox ......properties, driver detailes. Are the microsoft drivers in use-MGA.VXD, MGA.DRV,*vdd,*vflatd or is it the matrox driver-mgapdx64.drv? Right click on the background of the desktop and choose properties. In settings is the color palet 256 color and the desktop area 800x600? What is the refresh rate? Try reduceing the advanced hardware acceleration

-Matrox MGA Power Desk IS installed
-no diagnostics and pretty sure the MGA driver IS currently in use.
-looks like I am using the matrox driver
-mgapdx64.vxd
-My colour palet=True Colour (32 bit)
-My desktop=1024x768
-My refresh=60Hz
In Advanced,Performance my options are:
-Use Device Bitmaps Caching(box checked)
-Use Rectangle accelleration(box checked)
-Use Polygon accelleration(box checked)
-Use Circle & Ellipse acceleration(box checked)
-Use 3D accelration(box unchecked)
-Use Filtering When Scaling(box unchecked)
-Use PowerGDI acceleration(box checked)
I may play with these later. The amount of combinations to check is unreal! If you have any suggestions, I will try them. I have a feeling my desktop area may have something to do with things. I may try that also. You have been following this thread the most and will try any input you may have :-)

Your color and resolution settings are probably set higher than necessary and the refresh rate is a bit low at 60 hz You could lower the resolution to as low as 800x600 and color to 256 and hardly see the diference on a 14 inch monitor and speed up your system noticably. Increase the refresh rate to 70 hz to avoid interlace flicker. In the programs area find matrox power desk and click on it . There should be a sub menu with Diagnostics listed. It is possible to turn off the power desk program. In my computer go to program files, matrox , and look for a registry inport file power desk off and power desk on. make shortcuts to the desktop for both these files. Back up the registry just in case. Double click on the off file and reboot. power desk will be off. If there is a problem you can boot to safe mode and turn power desk back on. Worst case would be a loss of scync and the monitor blanks to protect its self. Then you can do a blind boot to safe mode-Hit f8 at the beep and hit 3 and inter. there will be a longer than normal time of hard drive activity ( safe mode loads without disk cache) then safe mode will come up useing a driver that is easy for the monitor to sync to. I think if you turn of power desk you will just lose some of those options in display properties but it could efect the desktop area setting, resolution. It is a bit unnerving to experiment with these settings as it is posible to damage some monitors. lowering the resolution should't cause any problems, the monitor should run cooler at a slower scan rate

-turned off Power desk
-reduced screensize and increased refresh rate
-still having the problem :-) I am going to try to see if I can get (at least) the dos prompt window in 'Safe Mode', just to see if that makes any difference. I may have to re-install the windows drivers for display. THAT SHOULD WORK. Just as soon I figure it out........Any other suggestions are warmly welcome :-)
Thanks for your continued support
