I accidentally did a FAT32 to NTFS conversion on my win98 system and that erased the whole operating system. Now i am not even able to boot the system from a CD or boot floppy to re-install windows software. What should i be doing ?

Did you set your bios to boot from cdrom first? When 98 starts to install using cdrom support it will reformat the drive to FAT32 from NTFS.

Yes I have checked the bios and the first boot option is by CD only. But when i place the CD and boot the system it doesnt find any boot record in the Win98 install CD. whereas when i put the Linux CD it gets the Boot record from that at boots properly. But i donot want to do Linux and first want to install Win98. Please let me know if u can help me regarding this. Thanks in advance

I'd say you will need to get rid of the ntfs
partition. Do a search for "delpart" This
program will delete the ntfs and you will
then have to format and fdisk as fat32 to
load win98.

I tried to download and run the delpart.exe . I got a error :"NTLRDR is Missing".Can you help me?

In this thread, partition - FREE, there are a couple of partitioning tools listed. Maybe one of the free ones has the ability to convert NTFS to FAT16/32 like PQ partition magic (needs to be payed for) does.
I would consider to check them out, see if it's possible. It would save you time and maybe more important it could save you from loss of data. I haven't tried converting NTFS to FAT, but it could be worth trying before deleting the partition.
Best of luck!

Anyone wonder yet how he converted his FAT32 partition to NTFS? He didn't do it from within Win98! There are two ways he could have done this.
1.) If his computer is already a dual boot, with Win98 and an NT (being NT, Win2K or XP) based operating system on it. In that case, you just boot into the NT based OS and reformat the drive back to FAT32 (after backing up the boot files first, then copying them back after the formating).
or
2.) He used NT based setup floppies or CDROM to do the formatting. In that case, he'd just boot from the disk(s) again and this time select FAT32 as his file system. If you can't boot from the Win98 disk, but you can with a linux disk, are you using a copied disk?

Maybe one of these will do it .

Delpart (is a util - and not bootable...) is run via the a:>\ prompt - after booting up (usually) from a '98 boot-disk boot - although the boot-disk can be either the dos or '9x variety; and it can be safely added to a suitable boot-disk to avoid a disk change...

Kwite how did you manage to convert fat32 to ntfs...?
Regardless - if the system is still intact (albeit ntfs) you may/should be able to use one of the various utils around that will convert ntfs back to fat32? The usual items are PM or SC (System Commander), and there are some freebies around too?

Everything fixed now :-) Thankyou. WIPEOUT dos utiliy from http://www.lurkhere.com/~nicefiles/index.html works just fine. After running wipeout on the c: drive i went through a lenghty procedure of formatting fidisking etc... My system has win98 back on it now.. cool. As for why i did a FAT32 to NTFS i was planning to make my computer a dual boot of win98/linux8.0 . I had installed paragons software which is a partition manager. some misleading tips made me do the FAT32 to NTFS conversion through that software and it took me quite some effort to get my win98 back. Anyway thanks for all ur help. BTW delpart didnt work for me..even when i ran from the bootfloppy.
