I wonder whether it is possible to restore the “Recycle Bin” after being removed inadvertently from my PC, which is running Win98 SE. I was obliged to remove Norton System Works 2002 after unsuccessful installation. Immediately after Norton’s uninstall, the Icon for the Recycle Bin on the Desktop appeared as a normal yellow Windows folder, but without any name.
I’ve re-installed Norton System Works 2001 this time and the Norton Protected Recycle Bin Icon re-appeared on the Desktop. The problem is that the standard “Empty Recycle Bin” option disappeared, while only “Empty Norton Protected Files” is there, i.e. deleted items practically remain in the Recycle Bin. I discovered that by going to the root of the C: Drive, where “Recycled” showed that deleted items are still there, and only the Norton Protected Files were emptied.
I’ve gone through different suggestions made in the Forums, but none worked for me. By running “regeidt” and under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\
Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Desktop\Namespace, I found that the key (645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E} has the value name of (default) and the value data of "Recycle Bin".Creating a shortcut on the Desktop for “Recycled”, by going to the root of the C: Drive, has not solved the problem.
I followed another tip, which said: Create a new folder on the Desktop and name it exactly as: Recycle Bin.{645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E}
Well, emptying all these shortcuts, which look like Norton Protected Recycle Bin, did not remove deleted items in “Recycled” !!!
I disabled “Norton Protection” and chose “Standard Recycle Bin”, but the same Icon still remains on the Desktop with deleted items still accumulating as shown in “Recycled”.
I kindly seek the expertise of computer people to end the problem.
Thanking you in anticipation,
MAK

First make sure your recycle bin shortcut points to c:\windows\system\shell32.dll etc
Try;
HKEY_CURRENT_USERS\Software\Microsoft\ShellNoRoam\MUICache. Should have line; @c:\windows\system\shell32.dll,-8964 with a data name of 'Recycle Bin'if not right click-modify-change name. No quotes marks!Also in HKEY_USERS (same path)
Or try a search in the registry for 'Recycle' without quotation marks, anything that refers to recycle bin should point to DLL qouted above

Try uninstalling Norton, then restart to DOS and enter
Deltree c:\Recycled
Then restart to Windows. The bin will be recreated on restart.
Then, reinstall Norton, if desired. (the Protected Bin is an install option, if you really don't want it)

Thanks for Responses (1) and (2). But neither worked for me. Concerning Response (1), please note Martin that I’ve tried to search the Registry under the path of HKEY_USERS as you recommended, but the only thing available was: HKEY_USERS\DEFAULTS\AppEvent\EventsLabls\EmptyRecycleBin with a Data name of ‘Empty Recycle Bin’ and Name (Default)
Martin, please also note that I don’t have the option of re-naming the existing Norton Protected Recycle Bin !!
I tried the suggestion made by “WhitPhil” in response (2) and nothing happened, except that I have completely LOST anything called ‘Recycled’. The Icon left on the Desktop after uninstalling Norton held the same appearance of ‘Norton Protected Recycle Bin’, but had no title. Right-clicking the said Icon showed 3 options: cut – delete – create shortcut
I think I’ve completely lost the “Recycle Bin”. Is that possible ?? Do I have to reinstall Windows to restore it ?? Please advise accordingly, and thank you very much for your assistance.
