Comment:

I fdisk and formated (c:format/s) c drive. When I boot the computer with CD ROM support and go to drive E (cd rom), I can see the directory of E but get a message "unable to read drive E" when I try to install Win98.

What is the reason for this & how can I install Windows now ?

I think CD ROM drivers have been properly installed because I can get a directrory listing of files in CD ROm.

probably a dirty or scratched win98 cd.
what I had to do was at c:\md\win98
press enter, then at c:\cd\win98 press enter
then at c:\win98 copy e:\win98
after copy completes ,type setup
at c:\win98

copy the contents of the win98 folder from the cdrom to c:\win98 folder on the hard drive, then run setup
(if you boot to a:\ it'll look like this)
c: [hit enter]
mkdir win98 [hit enter]
e: [hit enter]
cd win98 [hit enter]
copy *.* c:\win98\*.* [hit enter, it'll copy and tak you to e:\win98>]
c: [hit enter]
cd win98 [hit enter]
setup [hit enter]

that'll be a neater install of windows anyway
good luck

Hello,

Are you sure that you are seeing the contents of your CDROM and not the contents from the cdrom support boot disk?

Try drives F see what that does.

Also, what type of computer is it? I've encounter problems with Packard Bells losing their CDROM drive after being formatted or the user attempts to recover their original configuration.

If you down loaded your boot disk off the internet, there is a chance who ever built the disk named the CD rom drive something other than what you might guess. I've seen them named "X","Z". So look for what ever it says the CD is named when you boot with the disk.
