Unable to install programs

I get this error message whenever I try to install programs on win98 operating system. It says "ISSET_SE caused a general protection fault in module SETUP.exe at 001:000034cc." Any help will be appreciated. Thank You.

Is it any program or one in particular? I would take a close look at how your system is booting, there may be a program loading in the background (aka "TSR") that may be causing your failure. Look in the startup group in your Programs group, go Start/Programs/Startup, if there is anything in there delete it. This will not delete the program, but will disable it from booting. Next do a scandisk, Start/Run, then type "scandisk" (without the "). Do a scan of your hard drive and have it automatically fix all errors. Then open up the "Temp" folder inside the "Windows" folder on your hard drive and delete *everything* in it. Then reboot the computer, and try installing again.
