OS: Windows 98 SE (build 4.10
CPU/Ram: 533 meg Intel Celeron/256
Product: HP Pavilion 6635
Comment:

I have a HP Pavilion 6635 computer. The hard drive crashed on it so now I am using a hard drive from a unknown Compaq computer with Windows 98 system on it. I have not reformatted the hard drive, but have deleted and uninstalled all of the Compaq stuff that was on it. I am using the onboard audio connection, but getting no audio.

Belarc Advisor reports the following:

OS:Windows 98 SE (build 4.10.2222)

Processor:533 megahertz Intel Celeron
32 kilobyte primary memory cache
128 kilobyte secondary memory cache

Main Circuit Board:Trigem Computer, Inc. Cognac
BIOS: Phoenix Technologies LTD 1.09 01/27/00

Memory:256 Megabytes Installed Memory

Multimedia:
Crystal WDM Audio Codec
Gameport Joystick (no joystick connected)
MPU-401 Compatible

When I bootup, after the HP screen, I get a black screen that states at the top: "Starting Windows 98". Below it, I then get this message:

ESS PCI Audio Device Setup Utility, Version 2.3G
Cannot find ESS PCI Audio Adapter

I have gone into Config.sys & Autoexec.bat and turned off ESSAUDIO.SYS & ESSAUDIO.COM which eliminates the message at bootup.

In either case, on or off, Device Manager shows the following problem:

Sound, video, and game controllers:
Crystal WDM Audio Codec, Device not present, not working properly, or does not have all drivers installed. (Code 10)

Current driver is provided by Cirrus Logic, Inc. 4-4-2001

System.ini shows a problem with a driver for a mixer (error in ini-file). Unchecking this changed nothing during bootup.

Win.ini has Sounds listed as SystemDefault=,

When I go to Sound Properties from the Control Panel, the preview play button stays dull (arrow doesn't darken) and does not work.

I also do not get the speaker icon in the tray.

In DirextX Diagnostic, when I attempt to perform the DirectMusic test, I get the following message: "Music port activation because there was no sound driver found. Check whether your sound card is installed and working properly."

I have the original HP Pavilion Recovery Disks, but the drivers I have used from it don't seem to fix the problem. Here is a list of drivers I have tried before anyone wastes time recommending them.

Got to add/remove programs and remove any of the old ESS stuff--if it shows there. Then, this update may help:

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/...

The ESS stuff in config.sys and autoexec.bat is for Dos and isn't affecting the windows setup.

One reason the links you posted didn't work is because Hp 6635 has no Windows 98 sound drivers. The Driver that DAVEINCAPS post is an OS Independent and should work.

Thank you DAVEINCAPS. The patch you suggested I failed to mention that I had already tried as well. In fact, I reinstall that patch every time I am finished trying other things. There were no ESS programs showing to remove. Not even before hand when I originally removed unwanted programs.

Thanks beckrl. I know what DAVEINCAPS suggested should work, but it isn't which is why I am here instead of the driver forum.

New audio is sometimes the hardest thing to setup when swapping 98 drives. I spent days trying to get one set up when I swapped motherboards and the audio went from a Sis chipset to an Analog Devices. Finally I found the Sis uninstall program that was still sitting in the temp folder. Once I ran that I no problem installing the AD drivers.

Sometimes you can't just delete the info from device manager; you have to go through add/remove programs and uninstall it. But if nothing shows there for the Ess you're going to have a problem.

It's also possible you just don't have the right drivers. You might want to open the case and find the audio chip and post back what's written on it. Apparently it's a Crystal chip so it should have that written on it. There'll be other numbers and letters also on it that can positively id it.

Is there an add-in PCI card in this machine?

I have a very close motherboard (Everest Report);

Motherboard:
CPU Type Intel Celeron-A, 500 MHz (7.5 x 67)
Motherboard Name TriGem Cognac
Motherboard Chipset Intel Whitney i810
System Memory 320 MB (SDRAM)
BIOS Type Phoenix (11/15/99)
Communication Port Communications Port (COM1)
Communication Port Printer Port (LPT1)

Multimedia:
Audio Adapter Intel 82801AB I/O Controller Hub - AC'97 Audio Adapter [B-1]

As you can see sound device is listed as AC97.

The HP site for your machine lists the same;

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/...

Have you loaded the chipset (i810) drivers for that board/machine? (infinst_enu.exe)
(I also have the Intel810_w98.zip if you need it.)

Also, since this HD came from another machine (pre-loaded w/ 98) you could;

Open Regedit and navigate to the key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Enum

Right click on the Enum folder icon and choose Delete, OK on the confirm. Close out Regedit. Shut down windows and restart.

What this does is clear all the old hardware settings for the old machine.
When you boot this drive as C: in the new machine windows will run it's Hardware/PnP detector to find all your new hardware (mobo, controllers, etc.). Load the drivers as required.

!!!!! CAVEAT !!!!!: Your HP CD may ~or may not~ work for this. If "common" drivers aren't on the hard disk you will be asked for the 98 CD.

It's a good day when you learn something

DAVEINCAPS, you appear correct that I am going to have a huge problem because ESS was deleted rather than uninstalled. I uninstalled what I could. The rest I simply deleted after noting file name change seemed to disrupt nothing. Next time I'll do a search of uninstall programs before deleteing thing.

Dan Penny, I installed the i810 chipset driver beforehand when I was working on getting video displayed straightened out.

I have tried the AC97 drivers before, no luck.

I deleting the Enum folder, but the pc found old drivers that I know didn't belong and it installed them anyway. Now I am back with 16 colors and don't remember all what I did to correct this the first time.

I was only asked for 2 drivers during the many reboots.

I am thinking of trying a clean install of Windows 98 SE, but I remember running into HP conflicts the last time I tried that. But I have learned a lot since then.

Thank you all for your help so far. Would still like to know what you all think I should try at this point.

You'd need to reinstall the video drivers to fix the 16 color problem. But a fresh install might work better if you don't mind losing your existing software. You might want to copy off your My Documents folder and any other files you want to keep.

Since the drive was originally in a compaq you should probably remove the existing partitions with fdisk and then repartition the drive. Then format and reinstall 98. You'd probably still have to hunt down the audio and video drivers but that shouldn't be much of a problem since there won't be a conflict with any old drivers.

Update:

Deleted secondary partition, then primary.

Created new partition using 100% of disk capacity (10 gigs).

Formatted new partition.

Installed Windows 98 SE.

Ran video setup program from HP disk which installed the i810 chipset drivers. Video color and resolution are now fixed!

Installed audio drivers from HP disk. Audio not working. Downloaded and installed ac974026.exe. Audio still not working.

The Device Manager shows a problem under the tree for "Sound, Video, and Game Controllers" with "Crystal WDM Audio Codec".

Device Status for "Crystal WDM Audio Codec" says: "This device is either not present, not working properly, or does not have all the drivers installed. (Code 10)"

There is no speaker icon in the tray.

If no one has any other solutions, I just may trash this old HP.

It shouldn't be a problem getting the drivers installed now. Go into cmos/bios setup and make sure the audio is enabled. (If it's not then that was the reason you couldn't get it going before.)

If it's already enabled you should probably open the case and check the audio chipset as I mentioned in #4 to find out exactly what it is.

Intel 810 chipset, or is that just for video?

BIOS audio was turned on. I even turned it off just to see perhaps if something weird would happen. Of course, it did not. So it is back on again. I may try using a pci sound card.

No, it'd be a separate chip. But I missed that you'd used the drivers on the HP disk. Is that the disk that came with that PC? Those drivers should have worked. Is it a recovery/restore CD? If so, using that disk to reinstall the OS rather than a regular 98 CD should provide all the necessary drivers.

If you can't get the sound to work you could always disable it in cmos and install a sound card.

I found this driver that feedback said worked for your model:

http://members.driverguide.com/driv...

but if the one on your own disk doesn't work I wouldn't hold out much hope that anything else will work.

Final Update

Bought a sound card which did not work properly. Downloaded many programs and updates which also did not work properly all because there isn't much out there that still works on Windows 98. Max memory for my little HP Pavilion 6635 is 256 which just isn't enough to run on today's internet. So the entire project was trashed.

Thank you all for your help.
