Hello all,
I’m hoping someone can help me with a problem I’ve created on my Mum's PC. This machine only has 9 gigs of RAM on 2 partitions, 3 on the main one and 6 one the other empty one. Everything was working fine until i decided to move some of the unused software from the 3gb partition to the empty 6 gig one. There were about 5 programs in all and they appeared to be mostly for image editing, i think one of them may have been a web TV viewer package, so anyway i copied the files and pasted them into the other hdrive. I then deleted these files from the c drive and low and behold, i got the "Unable to establish a connection" message in the Dial up connection message window.
When i hit the connect button it just immediately comes up with Dialling... followed by 'unable to establish a connection', without any attempt to dial, these just immediately appear every time I hit connect.
Having realised my mistake I then went back and copied these same files back into the c drive, rebooted and still the same problem.
i then did a scanreg and restored numerous backups all to no avail, I still have the same problem.Help someone please!!
I feel a goose for creating this silly problem and humbly and gratefully accept any and all offers of help!!

may have to reset numbers, name and passwords for dial up settings, control panels >internet options> connections, and modem...:)

The problem with moving programs from one drive to another is the program no longer knows where to look for things. That is, it will be looking for files on the C drive when they are now located on the D drive. Also they might look for system files on the D drive whilst they are still on the C drive.
To move the programs, you will need to uninstall them and then reinstall them making sure that you change the default location to te D drive.

"This machine only has 9 gigs of RAM on 2 partitions"
Huh?
Drive capacity is not RAM - sure, it can used to emulate memory (virtual memory), but still, best not to confuse things
Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former.

I assume you mean that
you have 9 GB on the hard drive,
rather than 9MB.
9MB would also be extremely low
for the RAM, even on an older computer. If this is correct, 9 GB is
plenty, even with a typical
partition for two driver sections,
which most computers have.
If you really have 9 MB of Ram,
go for an upgade with a better
memory card.As for the problems,
copy & paste is not
the way to transfer files
for complete programs,
to anywhere, especially
between hard drive sections,
such as a C and D drive. There are procedures that
you need to learn about for
moving programs.Windows has many applications that
share the same portions of their
operating system.
Apparantly, when you did your
copy & paste, you moved something
that should not have been moved,
and may have corrupted the file
for a program.Reinstall is necessary.
If Dial-up Networking is listed
among your programs, remove it.
Do this by opening Settings/Control Panel.
Go to add/remove programs and
look under Windows setup.
After it is removed,
do a reinstall from the
same place. You will need the
Windows installation disk,
or check the Microsoft website
or a search on Google. Here is an alternative dialup program
that will also work:
Search Google for QuickDialer115.
Can't get the ftp program to download
from here. QuickDialer115 is a
freeware program that works as
an alternative dialer to
Windows program.

Hi all,
sorry for the confusion re hard drive and ram, as you correctly assumed wise words the machine in question has a 9gig hard drive and 64mb ram.
I will do as you advise and get back to you all.
Thank you.
B
