Hi
i'm having problems, installing this 40gb hard drive of mine. i've put it in and when i run through my bios its detected and its shown as the slave drive which is right. But when i start up windows it says its undetected and i have no idea how to fix it. i've made sure the cables are secure but still nothing. May seem like a simple question but i have no clue. help will be appreciated

If this is a NEW drive, have you partitioned and formatted it?

Did you set your HD's jumpers to slave ? Check on your HD's manufacturer to see the correct settings.

You need to partition it before it will be assigned a drive letter.

did the drive come with the utility disk? Maxtor will have Maxblast disk for setting up the new drive.

if all else fails- try to install windows98se on it. Because after so far into the installation it will tell you that it can't go on because the drive isn't formatted and will ask you if you want to format it now and you click yes. I don't know for sure that it'sll work, but I do know that it happened to me when I reinstalled and hadn't formatted

oh- I didn't finsish. I meant to say that after it's formatted you can always cancel installation. I know it's not the right way to do this but my knowledge is limited and I would try it if I had no other answers

Use Fdisk
Say yes to allow large disk support.
Now pick your new drive and make a primary partition.
Reboot the computer and then format your new partition.
Reboot the computer again and you should be good to go..
