Hi,
Got a problem with a Windows 98 machine. It has one harddrive of 6 GB, divided in three partitions of 2 GB. Drive letters are C, D and E. Now, drive's D and E defragment alright, but C won't. The message says that there isn't enough memory available.
The machine is a Pentium 4 1,5 Ghz, with 256 MB ram. Using the Win98 safe mode during boot doesn't help either.
Regards,
Rob

It's possible that there is not enough memory, some or a lot of programs are running in the background. Try to close all programs that are running and try again or....
You can do also a defrag from the DOS command line, but you will have to startup in DOS-mode.

Download and Install the Win ME Defragger from surecool.com , Click this link

then reboot in safe mode, run scandisk, then run defrag, but without the option to rearrange programs. You can do that next time, but get it cleaned up first the simple way.

Rob...can you run scandisk???..if not are there bad sectors showing up???

Close down all running programs & services...Cntl-Alt-Del...EXCEPT systray, defrag, and explorer...

The ME defrager is very good also, faster and more complete than the one in W98...

If that doesn't do it, see if you can get a copy of Norton Systemworks 2001...the scandisk and defragger are a little more powerful and approach the job little differently that what comes with Windows...

Good Luck
Steve

Thanks DW & WhitPhil.

One more "drive size factor" I didn't know about. I like using multiple partitions, so will be careful not to go for too small cluster size if over 8 GB partiton size.
