Unable To Create A Network Socket

Comment:

Last week, I started recieving the following message when trying to access the internet using Win98 and Netscape Communicator 4.6 -
"Netscape was unable to create a network socket connection." This occurs both, prior to beginning the dialing sequence and after dialing into my ISP. If I try to use Outlook Express 5, I get a message containing the following information "Secure(SSL):
No, Socket Error: 110001, Error Number 0x800CCC0D". If I use Internet Explorer 5.0, I get "Cannot find server or DNS error".

I have tried removing and reinstalling all network components, TCP, etc. I have reinstalled the winsock.dll file in C:\windows and the wsock32.dll and wsock32n.dll files in c:\windows\system. I have also uninstalled and reinstalled Netscape Communicator 4.6. In addition, I have also deleted the fat.db file in C:\netscape\users\ronwest\cache as well a the rest of the cache and the netscape.hst file in c:\netscape\users\ronwest. This didn't help either.

So far these are all the recommended "solutions" I have been able to find on the net. I even filled out a netscape help form and have not received a reply from them.

Does anybody out there have any solutions or recommendations? I am having to access the net using an old 486 PC with Win3.1 and a 28.8 modem and it is soooo sloooow. If you would, please send me an email directly as well as posting a reply here.

Please reply as soon as possible. Your help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

RonWest@prodigy.net

you have 2 options
1- reinstall windows 3.1 and all the software you need, then you need to download
the tcp/ip proto. ftom microsoft ftp for
windows 3.1

2- go and get a new pentium II with at least
350 CPU ,64 MB ram , 8 Gbyte hard disk
do not waste your time with 486!!!!!

Thanks for your reply. I'm sorry, I failed to mention my main machine is a AMD-K6(3D) with win98. I am being forced to use my 486 with win3.1 to access the net because of the problem.

My problem is with the amd-k6 machine and win98,ie5.0, outlook 5.0, and netscape 4.6.

Somehow I have crashed some file, which I suspect controls the tcp configuration. I have extracted and replaced several files as indicated in my original posting.

Any ideas on this problem?

HI..
there is apparently something wrong with your configurations..
What proxy server are you using?? And do you know your ISP's DNS servers? There are several socks programs out there ..
one of the better ones is at http://www.humingbird.com

....If you need help with anything..email me..this is my first time to this particular web site :)

you might try un/reinstall tcp/ip again but also rename .386 files inbetween. That is, uninstall, say no to reboot, rename files, add tcp/ip back in & then reboot.

all you should have to do is extract winsock.dll from the win 95 CD and install it to c:\windows or windows\system directory

same problem here - someone installed AOL 5 on my win98 machine and it screwed up everything. Even after it was unistalled netscape still says "unable to create network socket connection." When I called AOL's tech support I had an engineer read me the quote from their lawyer they use in their PR denying there is a problem, etc.

I am having the same problem with a friends laptop. She had installed an AOL 5.0 trial CD, now she decided not to go with AOL, and when we set up a dial up acount with another ISP and try to use IE 5 we are able to connect but can't see any web pages and with netscape 4.5 we get the message "unable to create a network socket connection". Maybe its AOL's way of ensuring you don't go to another ISP.

Receiving the same message when attempting to connect through a LAN and a proxy server. I can ping my router and use network neighbourhood but BOTH IE and Netscape 4.X give error message. Think its something to do with just upgrading to WIN98 SE as worked before. Have reloaded TCP/IP many times, also reloaded Winsocks. help

Solved my problem
a) copied all the CAB files over the top of the ones in \windows\options (or wherever), then deleted networking protocol, drivers etc
and
b) noticed that I was running IRMON (the infrared monitor) turned this off and disabled it in Control panel. Hey presto !
NB I unsure if both of the above were required

Netscape was unable to create a network socket connection.
There may be insufficient system resources or the network
may be down.

Ok, here's the deal. We are using a LAN to connect to the internet. We are NOT using TCP/IP. We are using IP Gateway. MANY of our computers do not work this way, while some manage to. All the computers work fine with IE and TCP/IP (our prefered choice), however we have run out of IP address and our 'Higher-ups' refuse to purchase more. We are a pilot organization which is why we were given the horrible job of testing this method.

If anyone knows how to make Netscape work with IP Gateway on a LAN please email me. We have many people who urgently need to use these computers.

Thank you.

(for all of you who need help our suggestion is to just stick with IE5. Only problem is that it doesnt use IP Gateway.)

I have encountered the same problem in setting up a new machine. I have set up 8 identical machines without a problem, this 9th one is unable to create a network socket. I have tried all the suggestions above with no success. One thing though, I cannot reinstall Windows 95. The pc hangs during the install and I am forced to exit. Any and all suggestions are welcome.

Basically, I think it is down to your pop and smtp settings.
On the servers tab of your account properties are the pop and smtp settings - make sure these are correct.
For example, freeserve is pop.freeserve.net and smtp.freeserve.net, but check with whoever for the correct settings.

After trying everything recommended above to no avail, I went into CONTROL PANEL, NETWORK and removed everything under CONFIGURATION, restarted then reloaded CLIENT FOR MS NETWORKS,DIALUP ADAPTER and TCP/IP. I had already tried this half-a-dozen times to no avail. The difference this time was that everytime I got the messages saying I already had a newer version of a file and was asked if I wanted to keep it I clicked NO. This worked for me. Good luck!

FINALLY!! This did it for me:
Your problem sounds like it's being caused by a corrupted registry entry. In Windows 98, you can try this... Make a backup copy of your registry. Then navigate to H_key_Local_Machine, System, Services. Delete the Winsock2 folder. Then uninstall dial-up networking and re-install it. The re-install will recreate the Winsock2 entries in the registry, and you should be back in business. Very important----> ALWAYS make a backup of your registry before fooling with it, so if something doesn't work as planned you can recover. Let me know if this works. Redbank123@yahoo.com

Try to visit:
http://help.netscape.com/kb/consumer/19980922-6.html

In this page you can find a complete solution of this problem:

Problem:

Cannot communicate with the network; unable to create a network socket connection.

Solution:

This error indicates Navigator cannot find the Internet or network connection. The first thing
you should verify is that the connection exists. To do this, establish the connection to
your Internet Service Provider, verify that the connection is established, and then launch
Netscape.

If the error message is still present after verifying the connection, try a web site using the
DNS Address rather than the domain name. Try this URL:
http://198.95.251.30/

If you are able to reach this site, the problem indicates incorrect or no DNS settings are
placed in your Dial-Up Networking or Network set-up. To check these settings,

1.Click the Start button and choose Settings, Control Panel.
2.Double-click the Network icon.
3.Select "TCP/IP Dialup Adapter" (you may have to scroll down to find it) and click
Properties.

Note:
If you do not see "TCP/IP Dialup Adapter", you will have to install Dial-Up
Networking. To do this:
A.From the Control Panel, double-click Add/Remove Programs.
B.Click the Windows Setup tab.
C.Place a check next to Communications (if there isn't one already) and click
the Details button.
D.Place a check next to Dial-Up Networking.
E.Click OK to exit out of all dialog boxes.
F."TCP/IP Dialup Adapter" should now appear in the Network Configuration
box.

4.Click the DNS Configuration tab. Place the Domain name and DNS Addresses in
the fields. (This information is provided by your Internet Service Provider or
Networks System Administrator.)
5.Click OK to save changes.
6.Restart the computer.

If your TCP/IP settings were correct and Dial-Up Networking or other dial-up software was
installed and working correctly, the problem may be the Winsock.dll or wsock32.dll file. These
are files that make it possible for Internet applications such as Navigator to connect to the
Internet. To fix these files:

1.Search your entire hard drive for Winsock.dll. To do this, click the Start button,
choose Find, Files or Folders, type winsock.dll, and click Find Now.
2.If multiple copies of this file are found, rename the winsock.dll files that do not belong
to your dialup software to winsock.old. To rename a file, right-click it, choose
Rename, type the new name, and hit the Enter key.
3.Repeat the last step, subsituting wsock32.dll for winsock.dll.

This procedure makes certain Navigator is connecting to the proper winsock file.

Dunno if this is related or not, but I have a new machine with Windows ME on it, and I can't install the "TCP/IP Dialup Adapter" protocol at all. Even with Dialup Networking installed, it just isn't an option under Control Panels > Network > Configuration tab > Add > Protocol selected > Add. There's "TCP/IP," but no "TCP/IP Dialup Adapter." Any guesses? (Thanks in advance!)

Response 25 works like a charm. After doing everything beside going to the local McDonalds and busting a few caps;) out of anger, I tried the solutin and it worked the first time. One thing however, people should know that uninstalling dial-up networking is under start>control panel>add/remove programs>windows setup; doubleclick the communications checkbox; uncheck dial-up. Yes, some of us need idiot-proof directions:)

Thanks a bunch!
