UMAX Astra 2000P Freezes up

I have a window95, 200mhz MMX tech computer. For 6 months my UMAX scanner worked great. Now it does nothing but freezes up. I have uninstalled, installed the drivers many times. I have purchsed a new Parallel Port Card (Bi-directional). Nothing seems to work. When I scan to preview I have no problem. But then when I scan in any dpi setting it will freeze. Sometimes in the middle of the scan, at the beginning or at the end. ONCE in a great while it will scan and I notice that it is writting to the hard drive. When it freezes up I notice it doesn't. I have plenty of room on my dive and I use over 80% of the ram resources. I have over 80 ram too. I have called the company and after replacing the scanner (they thought the otherone was broke since they had no idea why this happens) it still happens. If I reboot the computer it recognizes the scanner again only to freeze up when I scan. ANY ideas...This is like a puzzle to me.

I would try a windows 'reinstall over'.

If I do a windows reinstall do I need to reformate the hard drive? Will I loose any data? And what is the correct way to do this? I have the windows95 disk. Thanks again.
