Since upgrading to Windows 98, I can't get UDMA support to work, it has to be disabled in the BIOS otherwise windows locks up when loading. I have Maxtor Diamond max Hard drive,Sony CD-ROM drive and a QDI motherboard.
I am having the same problem. Have found no answer yet.

Mine doesn't lock on startup but sometimes freezes. I don't know if this is a Maxtor problem, but the fact is that a lot of Maxtor owners do have problems with UDMA.
I bought a special UltraDMA cable (ATAS) but it didn't work. Don't know where the problem is. I'm using an ASUS TX97-E and a 233MMX.

The problem is in the Viachipset I belive....if the asus has via im on th money/...ive been doin the runaround with a Qdi board,no udma....recently they released a udpate driver...caused my machine to start chuggin real slow...dropouts in audio software consistently...qdi is a lame asian site,(lotsa typos and grammer spoofs) so I highly doubt anyone with via chipset ona board wiol get satisfaction from them...a good point to ponder is this...try to judge a motherboard(or any other component for that matter) company by their web site proficiency...lol ...seems to work tho anywho the udma problem is the viachip and sumthin bout the pci bus

I have been having the same problem for some time myself and i found a strange yet simple solution. I found that if i make my BIOS auto find my hard drive insted of pre setting it my system boots without any problems. Im not sure why this is the case but its works for me. I think maybe the Award BIOS working in conjunction with a VIA chipset has something to do with it. Or perhaps UDMA needs a 350+ procesor in order to work properly. Also i found before i discoverd this that when UDMA is enabled in windows and i reboot the system and when it didn't start and had to reboot again when the startup screen popped up i selected Normal startup and it continued to boot properly. I use a F.I.C Mother board with Award BIOS and Windows 98 SE with UDMA drivers for the VIA chipset from http://www.via.com.tw/drivers/index.htm the file called IDE Busmaster 580_2147.exe I also found a driver from http://www.highpoint-tech.com I hope this might help you all some.
