used a Ubuntu live CD ,it wouldn't run properly(crc error). But it wrote to the hard drive now I can't boot into Windows, unless I remove the CD drive. What happens is that it dispays the BIOS screen but before it POSTs it looks for boot info in the floppy and CD drives and goes no further. It will not boot from a Windows boot disk.I attached it as a slave drive and did fdisk/mbr but that didn't help. What should I do now?

"fdisk/mbr" only replaces the MBR of the boot hdd not to the slave. There are third party programs that will work. MBRWORK at www.terabyteunlimited.com/utilities.html
If I understand correctly, you can boot into 98 if you remove the cd drive ? Or are you saying if you remove the CD from drive?
"It will not boot from a Windows boot disk" my guess is the floppy is bad or not made correctly.
"I can't boot into Windows, unless I remove the CD drive." The only way I can see that happening is a bad cd in drive.

You should be able to use fdisk /cmbr <disk> to refresh the mbr of a non-booting drive. So if it was drive d: when set as a slave in the second PC it'd be fdisk /cmbr d:
