Comment:
When I try to start my computer, the following message comes up: "Type name of command interpreter". I typed "SYS C:" then enter as was suggested in an earlier post and the same message comes back. Thanks for your help Ken

You would type:
c:\command.com
if booting off your hard drive
or
a:\command.com
if booting off a floppy
Sounds like command.com has been deleted.

You can't type 'sys c:' when it asks for the name of the command interpreter. You'd need to do as Skip suggests above.
But if you boot from a good bootdisk of the same OS version as is on your hard drive and at the a:\> prompt type:
sys c:
and enter, that will refresh the system files and copy command.com to the drive.
Sometimes that message comes up because the HD is not identified properly in cmos.

To get it to look at C:\ for COMMAND.COM (instead of wherever it happens to be looking now), enter "SET COMSPEC=C:\COMMAND.COM". You may enter this in your C:\AUTOEXEC.BAT file if your problem persists. Hopefully, as mentioned above, doing a SYS C: will fix the problem, not when it asks for the location of the command interpreter, but as a solution when able to boot with a boot floppy and get an A: prompt.
