Hey I have tried everything I can think of
I had 8mb ram and 98 require 16 so I bought 2*32mb but now comes the problem if I only insert the 2 32mb then it won't go anywhere after first screen at booting. if I have the 2 4mb + the 2 32mb it goes on but dos can't handle that much memory and freezes I disabled memory check but now the big problem when trying to install windows98 it freezes at install screen just when it would say win98 require 16mb memory. if i only have 2 4mb and 1 32 it won't give me display on the screen because it seems to require 2 memory or 4 and if i take 1 4 and 1 32 it won't work either plz help me

Hi
You will need to know how the memory needs to be configured, in other words which slots can be used to configure 64MB.
What is your motherboard brand /model/numbers. Perhaps the computer model could be a help here too.
If you are unable to find anything on the web, post the details of your 200mmx here and someone else might have better luck.

Old socket 7 systems that use 72-pin SIMMs have to have the RAM sticks installed in matched pairs. Are your two 32mb sticks identical? Same brand & chip count...both either EDO or FPM? You can't mix & match & you can't pair up a 4mb stick with a 32mb stick...it doesn't work that way.
And don't exceed 64mb total RAM, you'll hurt you performance because of the 64mb cache limit of the old socket 7 chipsets.
Have you looked into your BIOS settings? You may have to reconfigure you settings to the new RAM.....

I have old socket 7 system the other stuff you said at least I think so. The thing is if I connect only the 2 32mb it starts and it counts that there is 64mb memory but after the first screen where you can enter bios options it freezes. And yes the 2 4mb is same kind. and the 2 32 is also same kind (not as 4mb). but if I add the 2 4mb + 2 32mb I have 72mb memory and it goes on after first screen where you can enter bios but after that if I use dos it freezes unless I set mem check off. then the big problem is when I try to install win98 it freezes just before it shows up win98 install if I start with boot disc but if I have installed dos and and try install win98 with memory check disabled it freezes just when you get win98 install screen(the one where it says 30-60min for win98 install....) and just 8mb memory is not enouth to install win98 so I need help to install it ;( would it work if install win95 with 8mb ram and there after I instert 2 32mb ram and startup win95 and from it update to win98 ?

I believe it's himem.sys that can't handle the memory I read something where it said max 64mb ! but the thing is if I insert only the 2 32mb it won't go any fearther then the first screen where you can enter bios settings ;(
and as you said jam I can't mix 1 4mb and 1 32mb ! so what can I do ???

try at the first two rows the 2*4mb and at row three and four the 2*32mb
if that doesn't work, try it the other way
if that doesn't work, check the memory this way:
take the windows 98 startup disk and make a change in the file config.sys in this line (it's three times present):
device=himem.sys /testmem:off
change the word off in the word on, so that it says testmem:onwith this startup disk you can check the memory for errors
but as far as I understand your problem, you should take your old 4mb memory sticks to the shop and ask them to replace the 32 MB with 32 MB memory that should work in your computer, for they gave the wrong ones

the thing is that if I have testmem:on it will freeze! ;( - Bios can calculate that I have inserted all 4 memorys and total size is 72mb. But it's himem.sys that dos and/or a boot disc use that can't and that's when it freezes at testmem so I have to have mem test off. But when I do install win98 it freezes at install screen if I have memtest off in config.sys and if I do only have the 2 4mb memorys it's to little memory at win98 install screen(require16). and last but not least I still can only have 2 or 4 memorys in the computer and I can only have the 2 4mb as Simm 1 & 2 and the 2 32mb as 3 4.

My opinion: At least one of your 32 MB sticks is bad, or they are incompatible.
I have used HIMEM.SYS with up to 256 Meg with no problems.

Hi
Yes there is a good testimony above that there could be all sorts of problems.
However to save guessing - what motherboard computer are you trying to get going. Someone can check the specs of it to see any special instances.
Post too - any main number on the memory sticks or a number common to most of the chips on the memory stick

Yeah, either there's an incompatibility between the memory and the motherboard or (more likely) you have some bad RAM. The problem is not with dos or himem.sys.

Hello all!,
I would aggree with DAVEINCAPS on this, I am currently running Win98se on a PII-350 with 384megs RAM, I have himem.sys and emm386.exe running from config.sys. Never had a problem. It is possible that your MB may not accept the style of RAM you purchased. i.e., maybe it's ECC or double sided. It may take the larger RAM chips, but that old of a system, you prolly need single sided(density) RAM, and possible non-ecc, and deffinately prolly not parity style. I am running 3x 128meg chips on a 440-BX MB. It will actually take up to 768megs. 3x 256meg chips. I would do the recommended and ask the shop(store) that sold it to you to make it right with you. FIRST though, I would do a 10-20 minute research on your MB and find out what it will accept.Sean Martin
If the house catches fire, SAVE the computer!!

1st of all, don't use the 2 x 4mb chips...use the 2 x 32mb chips only. Can you get into the BIOS with the 2 x 32mb? If so, did you check your memory settings like I suggested? How familiar are you with BIOS settings? You may wanna try clearing CMOS & starting from scratch....
2nd, try a different bootdisk. Go to bootdisk.com & download a new one...
3rd, what's the make/model of your motherboard?

I think I got the problem now ;(
cost me ordering 2 times ;( tried 2*32 and now also 2*16 !
The problem is very likely that it's not gold tips on the memorys I gotten but the old 2*4 is ! and I just checked a page I just found where you add maker off motherboard and so on and they show me ;) gold tips on the memory !
by the way the site is
http://www.crucial.com/

I'd heard there may be problems if the contacts weren't the right metal (gold vs. tin) but I thought it was due to an electrolysis-like process that caused a buildup on the contacts that eventually resulted in a bad connection.
Have you bought and tried the gold tipped ones and, if so, do they work?

Hi
Lots of different sort of problems. With the tin and gold problem, just cleaning will solve that problem for a time.
However I also, with the lack of knowing sort of model the macne is, think back to someone who had wacked in a 200MHz chip into a similar model, which due to wrong voltage, was unable to truely supprt it. It however "almost ran".
Some details of what the computer is would be helpful..
If its an old HP vectra for example, I could tell you they take a VERY particular type of memory. Even though the memory from other motherboards (that appeared to be the same as the HP) looks the same physically it will not work correctly in the HP.

Yeah, it's been awhile since I've had a simm memory incompatibility problem. It seemed to occur more often with compaq/HP type machines.
I got a P-I motherboard once which was configured incorrectly for the cpu. It was either an MMX cpu and jumpered as non-MMX or vice versa. Anyway I could see lines burned into the mother board going from the incorrectly placed jumpers to a voltage regulator. Suprisingly the cpu was still good but the motherboard was shot.
