You answered your own question...it needs to read the protman.dos file off of the Win98SE CD.

When you get this message. click on details - it will tell you source and destination for the file.

If networking components have been installed on this machine before it may still be in the destination location. You can tell it to look there and see if it finds it, BUT you really need to get a Win98SE CD if you are going to use this OS.

Rule #1 Good computers don't go down.
Rule #2 There is no such thing as a good computer.

Without a CDROM, it makes things more difficult, but only a bit.

If you're not in a position to purchase a CDROM drive for the machine, and you have access to another desktop machine or similar, one of the least expensive ways to get the appropriate data onto/running from the laptop hard disk is to buy a 2.5" : 3.5" disk IDE adapter cable. These are generally only a couple of dollars.

You temporarily "mount" the laptop hard disk into the larger machine. You then create a directory in the root (directory) of that drive for your setup files. (ie; 98SE) Copy your CD contents and/or any other setup files to this directory.

Return the laptop drive to the unit. Boot normally, then run the setups you need. When it asks for a location of the files (usually "Have Disk"), point it to the directory/setup file(s) which you created while on the larger machine. Once it "finds" the source files, any subsequent requirements for the CD will automatically be pointed back to that directory. ie; No hands file loads.

It's a good day when you learn something
