I intended to network my Windows 98 machine and my NT4 Workstation. I installed a Trust PCI Ethernet Card Combi in a spare PCI slot in the Windows 98 machine. PnP detected the new hardware. I tried initially to install the Windows 95 driver from the driver diskette supplied and then installed files from Windows 98 CD ROM. Windows 98 kept on defaulting to Realtek RTL 8029 driver. When I rebooted I got a message “Realtek RTL 8029 (AS) 8 PCI Ethernet NIC 0000” was not installed properly. The network card showed with a yellow exclamation warning in device manager. I used the diagnostic utility on the disk which showed me a media connection error and an IRQ line error (IRQ allocated was 5). Media connection error could have showed as I had not cabled at this stage?
I downloaded a driver from the Trust Website for Windows 98 and tried to load this from the hard drive and from diskette. Every time Windows 98 would get to 11% using the Trust driver (file MSNET32.dll) and would then default to the Realtek 8029 driver again. I read that there was a known problem with this driver, which could be resolved by downloading the Service Updated from the Microsoft website. This I duly did. When I rebooted, my computer started up in safe mode. I tried removing and adding the Network Card (using PnP) and Add New Hardware. Everytime it crashed the PC when I rebooted. Finally I physically removed the card and booted successfully.
Is there a problem with Windows 98 defaulting to this Realtek driver all the time (I seem to remember something), but can't find anything in the MS KB. Any enlightenment on my catalog of woes would be welcome guys.
