Greetings.....
Need to regain space on my hard drives (I have 2 with a total of ~9 partitions most of which are ~2GB) that are full. To date, my strategy has been to periodically archive (copy) portions to data CDs (~650MB/CD) and then clear the drive space.

I now have NERO (5.5.9.0)and do use ISO Level 2, Mode 2, ASCII, Joliet mode, Relax Pathdepth and #Chars but I still run into huge problems with pathnames being too long (>255 chars?). Even if I let Nero "assign shorter names" to the hundreds of files it complains about, it aborts the burn due to "non-unique file names".

Only opts I seem to have to get around this is to try manually finding and renaming hundreds of files OR to manually zip this stuf first (does maintain all long pathnames but date-time stamp attributes on the folders are lost--all are set to time of the zipping).

Have searched for hours now but cannot seem to find a app that will quickly and simply allow one to copy an exact Dir Tree along with its files (a "CD size chunk") FROM my hard-drive TO a data CD (an exact copy with all pathnames and folder attributes as they were/are).
If Win95 allows this stuf on the hard drive, seems someone must offer an option to "simply copy exact chunks of it onto a CD".
Would greatly appreciate any specific solutions, suggestions and/or info.

Thanks,

I know that using Karen's Replicator you can go directly to CDRW but I don't think it can set the size to 650MB as you desire.

I am wondering why you have any file names that exceed 255 characters. Do you have a virus?

Bryco...thanks for your response. After reading it and checking more closely, I may not have provided adequate facts re the problem I am having.

To answer your quesion: many/most of the items on the "1st nero problem list" are webpages I had saved using the filename that comes up by default when I use "Save As" in IE and then sometimes adding a "yymmdd" date onto it. Believe the default filename name comes from the source data for that webpage.

The "1st problem list" nero shows does not actually state that path length is the problem (as I had suggested). Instead it shows "renamed files or folders: the following joliet files or folders had to be renamed to make them compatible with the CD file system." Check of actual path length for several items listed found them to be 100-150 (<<255) so that would not SEEM to be the primary problem.

If I select the "continue" opt there, next nero popup shows a "2nd problem list" of items "failing a test for path depth (8 max) and/or length (255 max)".

If I select "Yes, allow this" nero then bombs saying "joliet names of these files (listed here in ISO-L3) are equal". The "two equal file names" shown (Our Response_Re_ Questions .htm) have lower case chars as well as spaces (so these chars must be ok) but they have been truncated down to 31 chars including the original (.htm) extension chars. This is why I had ASSUMED the problem related to path (path+filename) length....but it appears that is not correct either.
The path to the two original files (C:\User Files\sgfiles\mystuf.ti\YBR_corresp\) which is 44 chars and the longest actual original filename I can find within that dir is only 77 chars long. 44+77=121 which is well <255 so I guess I need to say I am not really sure what my problem is (or how to solve it).

Guess I am missing something...hoping someone can help me "see it".

I too have the problem of too long names/paths. I also save Webpages with the Save As option. I don't think there is real solution because I think the rules for storing the directory on the CD is somewhat different than that of the hard drive. I use to use Adaptec/Roxio CD Creator and if you look real carefully the files that have problems are italicized. The only solution so far is to rename the files and/or shorten paths. However these will destroy some of your links. Other problems include possibly illegal characters in file names. These sometimes show up when copying across the network. I think the problem in part is the cgi script attached to the page addresses. I've had some exceed 500 characters.

I agree with Wizard-Fred's assessment.

But is using CDRW an option using InCD?

It may be easier to manually determine the amount of files to make 650-700MB rather than renaming the files.
