can anybody tell me why my cursor changes to a timer when i go down to my task bar, everything is working ok apart from this anybody got any ideas

How much memory do you have? If windows can't fully load in memory then it has to access the HD, hence a lag. This may not be your problem but I have had that same thing happen in the past. I remember reading some time back that Win98 needed 47Mb of memory just to load properly. That is why when memory was much more expensive the big vendors were building machines with 48Mb instead of 32 or 64.
