I only use my computer for the internet and e mail. When I Start up ,the message "trend chipaway virus on guard" appears. Do you have to do anything to periodically up date? If so how would you do this? I know next to nothing about computers. I have w98 on a p2 350. Thanks alot.

The Trend virus guard is in your bios and prevents and alerts you to something writing to your boot sector. For all intensive purpose it is useless as a virus protection. You should have a good virus program. The trend virus program can be turned of in bios and should be off altogether or when installing some new programs or re-installing Windows. There are no updates for it. Read the Trend faq page, especially the last one, that state that it will not protect against all viruses.

Thanks Carlos.I bought a Norton 5.0 anti-virus sometime ago which I installed and later removed as I thought it was causing other problems. Would you advise reinstalling that, or would you advise another. What do you mean by bios? Thanks

You can either re-install the Norton's, or go to http://www.grisoft.com/ and get their free AVG program. Personally, I think it is better than Norton.

You BIOS is sometimes called your system setup. When you first turn on your computer, you might see a promt on the screen before Windows starts that says "Press Delete to enter setup". When you do, you can find the setting under the heading of ADVANCE BIOS SETTINGS. Just disable the Virus Warning and save the changes when you exit.
If you are afaid to make any changes you can alway exit without making changes. You sshould become familiar with bios, especially if you plan to add stufflike bigger harddrives and such.
Good luck
