My parents P133 (Win 95) has 2 harddrives from which I would like to get all the information onto my 40 GIG hardrive in my P4. I tried hooking up one of them as my slave drive but in Windows 98 it doesn't show up as one of my drives. What am I doing wrong, or is there some utility I need to use? Thanks

Hi Howard,

Could have done with more info on exactly what you did when slaving up but let me go through the process to achieve your objectives.

Firstly, your harddrive will be 100ATA and i suspect the hard drives from the P133 wont be, so heres what to do.

Use the IDE cable from the P133 machine to master your harddrive and then slave the other up with it (Make sure the jumpers are set correctly). Then switch on and go to your BIOS to auto detect the slaved drive. If it is 1.2GB or lower, make sure you set it to Normal mode, NOT LBA. Save BIOS changes and fire up your OS. The new drive should now show a host.

Write back if this procedure hasn't worked.

Anytime you make any hard drive changes, you have to enter 'Setup' and make sure that the new drive(s) are recognized.

Dear Howard,

I am interested in fitting a new "quiet" hard disk and transferring everything over from my present "C" Drive (and then clearing it after the transfer and perhaps keeping it on as a second drive for backing-up).

I have read that the programme for people like me who don't know what they're doing in Dos/FDisk etc is "DRIVE COPY".

I don't know if this would help you.

I am sure that the transfer can be done freely but I suspect only successfully by an experienced person or with the help of such a person.

Good luck! - and please let us know when you have achieved the transfer.

Regards,

Victor

Well as it turns out it was simpler than I thought. All I had to do was plug in the power and IDE cables and my system found the harddrive fine... that is once I got the jumpers right. The other harddrive in my parents computer is not even functioning at all which means I'm pretty much screwed there. But atleast I got the important stuff.
Oh by the way... I was told that in the BIOS settings the harddrives should be set to "AUTO"... mine were already. Of course every BIOS is different too.
