I have a toshiba satellite pro 400cs. My hard drive right now is a mk1926fcv(814mb)with win95.
I have a new hard drive -toshiba mk1002mav(1.2gb) with win98 already on it.
When I put in the new drive it is not autodetected. I flashed the bios didn't help.
There are no settings to adjust for the hard drive in bios - just autodetect or no drive
found.
When I put in the new drive the green hard drive lights up but then all I get is a blinking cursor line on the screen. After a
few minutes insert system disk message appears.
The only way I can access the floppy drive is
to put in a dos6.22 disk which won't install as it can't find a hard drive. I can get to A: this way though.
When I put a win98 bootdisk it says can't run under dos.
Any suggestions? Thanks.

Last things first.
Obviously you don't have a boot disk.
Your DOS6.xx disk may not find the hard drive if it doesn't have a FAT16 file system.
How was the W98 installed on the new hard drive? If it was installed on another computer then the hardware configuration is wrong.

If the hard drive is not detected in BIOS, this must be rectified before you can get anywhere.

Check the jumper on the drive and make sure it is set to master or slave as apropriate. Check the IDE cable at both ends, are they correctly fitted. Also try another power connector if available.

Are you sure the bios isn't seeing it? When you get a 98 bootdisk, boot up with it and run fdisk, option 4. What does it say?
